Our 165 Clutch does not disengaged properly (gears grind), unless the constant pump lever is on. This condition is worse when the tractor is cold. Is there an adjustment that can be made or is this a sign of greater problems?

Is there a grease fitting to lube the throw out bearing and the shaft splines? If they have been neglected, that's a problem. Any chance a sudden jolt twisted some splines?

Thanks, for your tips. I'm getting some help from Big Dean. I 'm going to try his clutch adjustment advice.

Ken how long has it been parked? It may just be sticking some, to see, tie the clutch pedal down ALL the way overnight, it may come loose. or in 3rd or 4th gear start at low throttle and increased to half and work up and down as SAFETY permits. Better yet go over to MF/MH board here and contact Big Dean, he has all the answers.

Is it a Spicer brand pressure plate with the two stage setup for live pto? Finger clearance has to be exact on all three. And the three set screws for the 2nd stage have to be equal and correct. Has somebody been into that clutch at some time? How much free play is there in the clutch pedal.

It is a two stage setup for live PTO. How do I get to the set screws? Yes, a mechanic has been in the rear end. I'll have to check about the free play. I have not driven it for awhile.

I don't know how detailed the Massey service manual is. The Deere manual for the same or very similar clutch is very picky and exact. The factory service bulletions afterwards are even more detailed. A couple of gauges have to be made or bought to set the finger and set screw heights at the exact height and equal. A quick and dirty setup may work but may wear more and grab some at some time.
