Heard through the grapevine that these are neat little beasts. Only about 3 feet tall fully grown and give 1 - 3 gallons of milk a day. Anybody have any experience with these? Between my dad and I, we mow about 5 acres around here just to keep the weeds down, and I'm wondering if these wouldn't be a better way to do it?

How about purchase price?
Maintenance? Are they a "sickly" type cow?

Just trying to wrap my mind around some new ideas; any opinions/input is welcome.

Thanks,
Anthony

Neighbor had some Dexters- seemed pretty useless to me, especially in light of the inflated price. If you're looking for good grass clippers, you can't beat a couple common old sheep.

I've got one that's Dexter mother was bred to a Simmental bull. The result was a smallish cow (about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of our longhorns and herefords) with great personality, a great milker and very gentle. We've bred her to another Simmental, a Gelbviegh, and a Hereford. Her calves are huge compared to her. They usually pass her in size within 3 or 4 months, and grow to be pretty much the full size of the bull's breed. Surprisingly, she has no trouble at all throwing normal sized calves.

Problem with things like Dexter cows or Kiko goats and the like is price. There isn't a low grade or "commercial" grade. The market is made up almost exclusively of breeder folk who try to convince others that these animals are worth a fortune and price them accordingly.

I think the Dexter is neat, but darned if I'm going to pay thousands of dollars for one.

Yea the wife wanted some of these till I found a few places that sold them. When she found out that they cost upwards of 10 Grand , she changed her mind and we got a Jersey.
