broken spindle and spindle question.

I broke a spindle and through a screwup on my part, I broke the hub also. I now have a new hub and spindle but there is something obviously wrong when I reassembled the whole mess. Is there somewhere I can find a diagram of how the bearing (and how many bearings) are arranged?

I have a Ford 851? (repainted to look like an early 4000 or an early 4000 with red primer)

I decided to buy a new set of bearings but for that particular spindle, there are two posible sets of bearings.

2 posibil sets of bearings? Are you talking about the larger bearing on the grease seal side and the smaller one on the outside, nut side? If not then I don't know how there could be more sizes on that tractor.

I'm as confused as you are. I don't know which set of bearing to order and I don't know if it will even make a difference. I didn't have much luck with the originals. I just cant seem to wrap my head around what is going wrong.

I can't understand why after I installed the grease seal, the large bearings, the small bearings, the washer and the nut with cotter pin, the whole wheel acts like it is going to fall off.

I know this shouldn't be complicated but it is driving my crazy.

Thanks for the help.

I am buying both posible bearings.

My problem before was that I was missing a bearing chase, I ordered new inner and outer chase. I will pick up the parts Wednesday.

I think I grok the process now.

You have a wrong bearing in there or are missing a part, do you have both bearing races in?

there should only be 2 bearings, the race goes in first for both. the seal holds the back bearing in, there is ussually a washer that goes between the small outer bearing and the nut. I like to tighten them up until the hub won't turn anymore, then loosen it until the hub spins free but not too freely, then line up the slot w/ the hole & stick the cotter pin in there.

They aren't too hard, just pack the bearings before assembly and then also pack the hub full of grease.
