What is the going rate for shares? I have a neighbor that wants to hay about 3ac. of my place but wants me to pay for seed. I am thinking he buys the seed and I take a 1/3 or a 1/4 of the hay and he puts up the cash.

Typically in our area on deals of this sort, the landownner pays 1/3 of the seed and fert. and 1/3 of any chemicals used for weed control. The renter pays for the rest of the seed, chemicals and fert, plus the cost of baling. The landowner gets 1/3. Hope this info. is helpful.

Case Lady has a good deal going there. What she says sounds about right.

Probably depends on your area- around here, generally nobody wants it at all, and you would be very lucky to get someone to go on shares. Lots of free standing hay available, and I noticed this year folks were advertising it in the paper while it was still early enough to make decent hay. Nobody haying anymore, all the horsey folks seem to want alfalfa.

I thought the term "hay" was just a generic and that alfalfa was a type of hay. Such as alfalfa hay, timothy hay, orchard grass hay, or clover hay.....

When someone says hay I think alfalfa. You cant grow alfalfa where you are at?
