I just got my Dads truck. It only has 109,000, 4x4 and has the 300 six. I love the truck but have two questions. 1st, it is the base model and I want to add a cruise control. Do you have any experience with the after market kits? Which is better and easiest to install. 2nd, I love the 300 six but are there any tricks to squeeze a few more miles per gallon out of it? Most of my driving is 4 miles each way to school each day where I teach. My Dad said the only time he measured it got 19 on the hiway. I get closer to 11 with my short trips.

Thanks and God Bless

I have to agree about the gears trick. I have a 95 350 cargo van full of tools the extended truck. It will get 20 on the hwy 16 in city. The difference is in the rear end gears. Mine has the 3:56 gears (high for truck). It has a 351W 5.8 and a HD AOD 20 bolt pan trans. I had a 150 with 302 AOD and 3:70 gears that only got 18 MPG at best. Some trucks come with 4:10 rear gears great for pulling heavy loads but hard on fuel whether gas or diesel. The next time you buy a truck check the axle codes and decide what you need. Mine is rated to pull 11,800 LBS. but thats on pavment not in the field. And it pulls hard.

I guess it depends on the individual but I have always preferred a stock look, and most of the aftermarket cruise modules look just that... aftermarket. However, most vehicles now are built with standard wiring harnesses. That means that regardless of the options, all the wiring harnesses are in place. That makes it cheaper for the company to build in the long run. (Fewer different parts, less time looking up which to use and/or screwing up) 94 should be old enough that you could find the cruise parts (computer, switch, cable etc.) at a junk yard for fairly cheap then just plug everything in. I did this on a Probe that I owned and it worked great.

I have a 96 and only get about 20 to the Imperial Gal/160 Oz. Do you have locking hubs on the front. They save you gas if you can unlock the front drive line. If you only make short trips mileage isn't a major problem. Trucks push a lot of air and that takes fuel. If you have a car for long drives on the hwy then you are okay. In my opinion Cruise Control is a waste of time.

I've got a '88 2wd w/ 300w/Mazda 5 speed overdrive. I'm getting about 16-19 right now, mostly highway and some city everyday. My brother's 94 4wd w/ 300 and Mazda tranny gets about 13-14, but it's in dire need of a tune up. He normally drives his beater car. My truck has somewhere around 170,000 (speedo/odometer drive gear in tranny broke @ 144,406), My brother's has about 195,000 and burns(leaks) oil.

Both are great trucks. I've had over 2 ton of rocks in the bed of mine already, and I've got 60 bales of straw in the back right now and another 15 in the trailer behind it ready to go tomorrow morning for delivery. In the winter when we buy hay I regularly pull 6-8 ton behind it. Trick is getting it going if your on ice in the driveway.

Love that old Ford...

I have a 91 supercab with the 5.0 v8 4x4 auto, and it does me good. Highway i could get just about 18mpg and city driving hard and fast it would get 11mpg. pulling the fishing boat on the highway it got 13mpg. I can't complain it's a tough old truck.Put a lot of miles on in 4 high up here in the winter and it would never complain it'd get about 11gpm highway and city .I'd say your in the ball park . take care P.S. truck has 170,500 on it and still runs strong with the normal maintance done to it.

I bought my '94 2WD new with the 300 inline six 5 speed. The 1st 175,000 miles consumed 10,000 gallons..... ..so my average is 17.5 mpg. i haven't figured the last 20,000 in yet.

I’ve installed Dana (sold under the Sears name) cruise control units on several different vehicles. Installation and adjustment is relatively straightforward, and they all worked great. I'd say go for it!

Your truck is not noted for it's good fuel economy - 11 mpg is actually pretty good. I carpooled with a buddy with a similar truck with a manual transmission….9 – 10 mpg was typical for our 15 mile commute (90% expressway).

If your only going 4 miles, you`ll hardly have time to set the cruise:) Just kidding
Seriously though, I think you`d be OK with an aftermarket cruise. Don`t have much experience with them, but it`s a pretty common application, I would think. As for milage, I don`t know what you can do to them. Sorry for the smart aleck remark and not much help Good Luck Brokenwrench

My '95 F-150 (2WD) with the 5.0 regularly gets 16 mpg, on the highway I can get just over 17 over long distances. Been pretty consistent since I got it 140,000 miles ago.

Thank you all.

I love the truck and of course since it was my Dad's ( the only new truck her ever had) it also has sentimental value. He had a stroke and cant drive the stick anymore so I found him an auto ranger and traded. He almost cried when I drove it off. But so is life as we get older.

Thanks again

God Bless

Play Farmer, Try this trick for better mileage, try to get in high gear as soon as you can. example, my 5 speed I start out in first(easyer on the clutch) and shift to third, then to fifth. The old thing will get 25mph and useing all the gears it will get 20mpg but it is a V-6
