2000 Silverado 1500 parking brakes are wimpy little drum brakes inside the rear disk. It looks like there is only one way to adjust these... take the disk/drum off and adjust the star wheel. No self adjusting mechanism. Do I have this right? I assume the procedure is some form of, adjust the wheel until it drags then back off a few clicks. It this about right? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a 2000 G.M.C. that the entire braking system is wimpy on.At 40000 miles the dealer said its not going to be long before i need pads and rotors because the rotors are scaling. He said G.M. has had problems with them. I see where they are recalling them for brake problems. Notices will be sent out in November.

Cowman is right. What he is talking about is a backer plate mounted on each side of the rear axle. Should have a rubber gromet as a dust cover over the slot. Remove that and inside the hub is a star wheel. The star wheel is up or down for brake adjustments and usually is done with a screwdriver. Sometimes the teeth get worn down and it will not adjust itself. When backing up in lot or drive and hitting the brakes a little harder than normal will adjust it sometimes, but if you still have problems keeping it adjusted after a manual adjustment, probably needs reworked. If you don't find a bar against that starwheel inside then someone has removed it and it will never work right until fixed. Any squeaks means trouble from the rear brakes.

Actually, you are both wrong, the silverado has disk brakes on the rear, and the parking brake is incorporated into it somehow. Totally different from adjusting drum brakes, and I don't know how either.

The Silverado has rear disc brakes and drum parking brakes. The parking brake drum is incorparated into the center of the rotor and is acuated by the parking brake cable. The recall is for the cables, seems they get rusty and the parking brakes do no release. I think both Ford and Dodge with rear disc brakes use a similar drum within a disc for their parking brake system.

My '01 Silverado has the disc brake/drum parking brake set-up for the rear, and I emailed Chevrolet a couple of years ago to complain about the lousy (my opinion) arrangement.
On mine, the left parking brake didn't release for quite some time, because when I went to have an inspection done, I didn't have a parking brake that would hold. I replaced both rear drums this year, and, so far, the parking brake still works. It appears to be self-adjusting, but I don't think the adjusters are all that reliable.
By the way, Chevrolet was real concerned about my problem---they assigned me a number, said they'd discuss it with the engineers, and let me know. I'm SURE I'll get a response any day now, since it's been over 2 years.....LOL

Thanks for letting me know Rusty, I did not know they quit using drum brakes.

Actually they have and they haven't. Buddy of mine just bought an '05 1500 crew....it has rear drums. The extended cabs and regular cabs have discs. Go figure???

Don't know about chevy but I was able to adjust the ones on my ford by sticking a screwdriver through the slot and turning the star wheel.
