I believe it started today. If anyone has been there, I'd appreciate a heads-up before I drive six hours one way.

Good Show. Antiques were great except for one yoyo who wants $7000 for an original none too pretty 444 Massey. Had a great time yakking with everyone in the antiques. Watch out for the two mounted OPP officers. They were/are riding Percherons and I overheard one of them telling a young lady that these horses aren't for the musical ride, more like charging into a crowd and what do you mean EVEN the Masons were there? EVERYBODY was there. Buy a raffle ticket on the Cobra or the HemiCuda. Number 2 son was drooling.

My eldest just about had a meeting with the OPP's mounted work horses. He was crossing the roadway without looking like I have given him h*ll for not looking 5,783 times in the past 9 years. I had to holler the kids name and "heads up" or he would have walked under the horses. The cop on the horse looked worried, annoyed and amused.

Plowing Match: Random Notes in reply to buickanddeere, 09-22-2005 20:35:49
The third officer on the highway seems to be there to yell "Hold it!" when the others can't get the cars to stop on the road. He saved my bacon when I almost blundered in front of a car running the roadblock.

Buickandeere's "masons" were the ones who built that magnificent limestone cave, with waterfall and courtyard. The landscaping by this masonry firm around the site is truly impressive.

The quilts were a class act, as well (tossing another bone to Buickandeere), but I really enjoyed looking at the old tractors. Somebody said they had 24 acres of antique equipment at the show. The Porsche wasn't the most impressive tractor in the row, either.

One of the highlights of the show was a steam engine running the saw mill. The young lady operating the power plant apparently acquired it as a wreck a few years ago and has restored it herself. It's a very impressive, self-propelled, 20 hp steam engine.

A scoop: one outdoor wood furnace dealer told me that his company is testing a prototype which should be on the market by next heating season. It relies on a computer to control stack temperatures, reducing the smoke to levels acceptable for town and suburban use, and greatly improving efficiency. This guy is putting a temporary gas boiler into his new house until the improved wood heater comes out.

I camped last night in the RV park and had a great chuckle this morning watching heavy duty 4WD pickups skating around in the mud. They may be great on the highway, but on a slick meadow they act like pigs on ice.

Those RV campers really know what they are doing: last night by 9:00 on a rainy evening there must have been 1500 of them on lawn chairs in the entertainment tent, watching the show. The rows of lawn chairs were as orderly as those in a theatre, and they perched there, appreciating the comedian, the fiddlers and the square dancing.

The comedian asked, "How many of you have been married for more than forty years?" Seemed as if they all put up their hands.

I got caught by the rain in a food tent with a couple from New Brunswick, owners of a potato farm. Interesting conversation about old and new tractors before we rigged garbage-bag raincoats and set off.

The people of the Listowel area are obviously proud of their community. It certainly showed in their support for the 2005 IPM. Beautiful country around there.

Jeff: I've got a couple of neighbors up there plowing in the antique classes. Haven't heard how they are doing. They wont be home until its over. Dalton McGinty was there yesterday, other than he and Glen, don't know of anyone else you could ask.

It was a good show. Go to the quilting booth at the north end of 6th St. My Mother-Inlaw is running it. Two of my kids have quilts on display. Hit row 1 early to try the Stihl chainsaw contest. Watch out for Dave Carson and his teams of horses if he's been in the Bud tent. A good showing of antiques in the southwest corner. Even the Masons are there drumming up some interest in the organization. Runs 08:30 to 17:00. Wear comfortable shoes and get thier early and study the map. I missed about 1/2 a dozen places worth looking at. Don't go on Saturday, the crowds are nuts. Drive another hour north west and come in for a beer and a look at my birds.

Thanks for the information. I'll check those sites out. I'm particularly interested in any forest demonstrations: we're getting ready for the 2007 show in Crosby. Our twenty-acre woodlot will be front and centre, right next to the tented city. I'm looking for ideas as to how to decorate it for the crowds. The committee has sprung for a forest management report, and they will be planting trees all over the place, even some four-year old walnuts and maybe a bunch of maples in a plantation layout, but kids need something more exciting than watching a tree grow.

How about a cider-pressing tent? Everybody who comes to the farm this fall goes all ga-ga over the neighbour's cider press, picking wild apples in the pasture by the barrel, and then grinding and squeezing with great enthusiasm.

The wagon tours through the woods may be tricky, as well. The trails are all golf-cart width.

Anyway, Listowel or bust! Love the slogan: Prepare to be amazed!
