Well I lost web service last night and cell phones did not work. All outbnound interstates are packed bumper to bumper and have been all night. Land fall is expected at Galveston. Lots of changes in 12 hours. If it hits that close, Texas city will be wiped off the map. Not all people can get out due to such a large population. I fear this storm will make N.O. look like a cakewalk. It is so strong that Lufkin will feel hurricane winds, folks that's a 150 miles from Houston and Houston is 75 miles from Gal.. Gusts are at 215 mph, never before in history. Substained winds 175 mph plus. It is large enough La. will get some more . If there was a cat 6 this would be it. It may calm to 150 mph on land fall but I think not because it has been too hot here setting record temps.. Even with a notice , a city this large can not move fast enough. This town will be under construction for a few years. All the emergency crews will have learned a great experience from this. I may lose web ability for a bit. My real thoughts are, I think we can not out run the storm due to tornados and so many other obstacles. People have been on the road so many hours they are running out of gas. Gas stations are either out or closed. I am grateful I do not have far to go. The damage of all this will be unprecented and no one could possibly be great enough to blame. This is all I have for now.

It's interesting that you point that out. I've been watching the news the last couple days, and keep seeing these 8-10 lane expressways with 4 or 5 lanes jammed in one direction, and the other 4 or 5 completly empty. I can't for the life of me imagine why they wouldn't put some traffic control in place, and use the rest??? Oh well, guess I only get to save the world from my arm chair.....

God's speed. Someone hit me if I ever whine about a blizzard again.

I grew up in Minnesota, and saw my share of blizzards, but never, ever felt or seen 150 mile an hour winds with snow.

Jay, I lived 6 months in a Minn. winter. I know what a blizzard is and they can be dangerous if not prepared. Even a heat wave can be harmful to some people if not fatal. I lived through Alicia, Allision, 3 tornados, numerous heat waves, a couple of blizzards and just what ever else will pop up. It don't matter where you live, there's always something to test your patience.

I don't know - I'm always prepared for blizzards. The generator sits full of gas with stabilizer in it. My gas can sits full. The 500 gallon tank outside is always at least half full. I have enough groceries on hand to feed a small army for a few days. Warm clothes ect in vehicles. Phone calls before leaving somewhere, and returned phone calls upon arriving. It's maybe not being prepared, just a bit of common sense. Speaking of which, Fox news this morning about 5 or 6 my time, interviewed a couple of homeless guys. Mid 30s, able-bodied. One had more stuck into tattoos than my car is worth. Anyways, they know the storm was coming, but had plans, until the reporter got a hold of them, to stay on the beach. I don't know, even a Cat 1 hurricane would be enough to make me close the shutters and bring in the lawn chairs. I have a hard time understanding stupidity.

Jay, I am like you in being ready for outages during any cold snap where a few hours can be life threatening but our resources are not likely to blow away or get damaged when the winds blow our house down. I think I would prefer the cold to the hurricanes of this year.

agreed - I guess I was trying to compare that to people not leaving or boarding up. I just don't get it.

Yes, I've been snowed in, snowed out, stuck partly frozen, good and mad, disappointed, drunk and sober all over various blizzards (in Manitoba) but in 53 years we've never had to GET OUT!! So I will also think twice before I complain much about the next blizzard.

AMEN to that and the above. Me, I think I would have left as soon as I heard it was gonna be a cat 4 if not before. Of course being retired that would be possible. In my old job, I would have to be there to either shut the plant down and put it on coldiron or ride it out. It went with the job, kind of like driving a bus, policeman, rescue etc.

Having a job like that didnt stop the workers at the old folks homes and hospitals in Loisiana from bugging out and letting patients drown. I certainly hope when things get sorted out down there that they send those people to jail for a long time.
