I am trying to start what looks like an 8 or 9n Ford. It's is my bosses (He does not really know I am working on it, but I will talk to him about it) and he used to mow his pastures with it before he sold his horses. It has been setting for about (A rough guess of 5 years). I tried jumping it with a garden tractor and I got it to turn over a few times then it stopped turning over and the starter would only click. So I hooked it up to a battery charger and went on mowing the lawen. Afterwards, I came back and tried starting it again, but the starter still just clicked. I got looking around and notice that the all for spark plugs are rusty, the battery should be replaced and the oil and gas sholud be changed to. I would like to know how to change the gas and how much spark plugs could be. Also, could the distubiture be bad or what?

If there are any questions or answers, feel free to post

P.S, I would like to keep the cost down as much as possible, but I know how old tractors are.

first off, you need permission before you start messing with it. It was pretty bold of you to do what you've already done. Plugs are not all that expensive at $2-$3 a piece, and you only need 4, but you might get by with just cleaning up the old ones on a bench grinder with a wire wheel brush on it, or use a piece of sand paper to clean all the rust and carbon deposits. The gas is alittle old and probably has started varnishing pretty bad at this point, so draining the tank would be good and cleaning the settlement bowl. Taking the carb off and cleaning it would be a good idea, but be super carful not to lose any of the parts and make sure to clean out all the little ports in there. Yes, it might not have any ignition, but try the above first and you'll probably start it. Oh, and yank that old ruined battery and put in a known good one, trying to start something with a ruined battery by jumping doesn't work very good and the others are right about a lawn tractor battery not having enough Oomph. Make sure and check the oil and radiator before you start it so you don't ruin the engine, and if you do get it started, change the oil before running it for too long.

Does it have a battery in it (dead after 5 years I'm sure) and is it 6 volt or 12 volt? The garden tractor battery is not big enough to make the N spin, so best to get a bigger battery. But we need to know if it is an original 6v or converted to a 12v.

To see if it fires up, need to flush out the gas as you are guessing. Probably the carb is varnished up, take off carb, let old gas drain out into a bucket, do a carb clean or rebuild ($20 or so if you do it?) and go from there.

Can try draining out gas, spraying a lot of carb cleaner through the carb, put in fresh gas, & see if it goes - but a tear down is better.
