I have numerous tanks that held diesel or gas;is it possible to get one clean enough for drinking water, without having a petroleum smell/taste? we need to transport water for our hunting camp.

Just to add another nay. We got a 30 gallon plastic barrel that held tabasco. We cleaned the h*!! out of it and soaked water in it for 24 hours three times. We put the barrel up on the pilot house of a shrimp boat for a shower and emergency water. After all of that, if you drank it, it would light you up with pepper heat. It proved to me about containers and what they were used for.

Hi BSer,one sip from that old tank would have you pretty sick.If you choose to go with a large plastic tank,it probbably would be a good idea to add a small amount of chlorine to kill any bacteria and prevent alge from growing;don't know how much though, better ask someone who can better answer that part.Good luck and don't drink water from fuel tanks.

I don"t think there is any way. I sure would not want to drink water that had been stored in a fuel tank, no matter how clean it appeared to be.
Your best bet would be to pay a visit to your farm store and buy a brand new plastic tank. You can even get one that will sit right in the bed of your truck.

That should work for a few years. I have a 1250 gallon sprayer nurse tank that has had nothing but water in since I bought it- maybe late 80s,- bunch of years it has had stuff growing in it..... I know I didn't plant anything there. Would never use a fuel tank for potable water.....unless the balloon had already gone up and we were desperate. (mid 60s Army term)

Not in my opinion it's not. Old tanks have lead saturated into the metal that you can never get out. Gasolines leave benzene.

How big of container are you looking at and where are you at? I may have an alternative.
