Opinions on Deutz tractors

In Spring I had to sell my Massey 1135 for financial and practical reasons. Just too big for a small cattle operation like mine. Currently, I have to borrow tractors when I need them. I am hoping to rectify this next year if I can get the finances rectified. So getting to my topic, I was wondering what the general opinion of Deutz tractors was. I know that they left the American market for a while after they sold off Allis. I don't know why. I'm curious about the durability of their air cooled diesels. My uncle was a mechanic for the railroad and had the highest praise for the Deutz engines they used. I try to keep a tab on prices and such for equipment that I may be interested in and I've noticed that they seem to be reasonably priced versus comparable models. Also, I have noticed that not many farmers in my area use them, but the ones that do seem to have all Deutz tractors.

Thanks for the comments. The overheating was one of the concerns I was curious about being air cooled. What I'm going to be looking for is something about 50 or 60 horse with a loader on or to add a loader on at a later date. As the tractor is going to be used mostly to run a manure spreader, and hay equipment a three point hitch isn't necessary, but would be nice. Any suggestions for models I might want to look for?

I wouldn"t be the least bit afraid if them! I"ve had a D130 06 for 3 years now and a D80 06 since spring. A couple of workhorses. Not saying they can"t overheat, but keep them clean and they"ll be fine. I"ve never overheated mine, but...??

If your looking at an 06 or 07 series, they were excelent tractors in there day. And today they still are a good reliable utility tractor, if you can find one that's been taken care of.

I've kept at least one Deutz tractor on my farm since i bought the first one over 25 years ago. There's still lots of Deutz tractors on farms around here still earning there keep, in fact i bet i can show you at least 20 of them still working on farms within a 5 mile radius of here.

I haven't seen the overheating problem that was mentioned by another poster, and i find it a lot easier to wipe the air intake screen off on my air/oil cooled tractors than trying to blow out the radiator on my liquid cooled tractors. As for the cylinder fins plugging, they are a lot further apart than the fins on a radiator so they don't plug nearly as easy.

BTW, i've sold every Deutz tractor i've owned for more than i paid for it even after useing it for many years.

It must me the green paint... :>)

my opinion would be run away. when using in an agricultural application they have the nasty habbit of sucking up corn stalks leaves etc and over heating and possibly setting them on fire. as quick as you clean them off get back in the seat there full again. unless you take the heat shields off leaves wont accumultate but the heat wont dissapate. of course a liquid cooled tractor you must keep leaves out of but most dont have heat shileds around the finned heads. how many old balers started on fire back in the day when they had air cooled wisconson engines. vermeer had tons and tons of problems with them in thier treachers. the problem was on a treacher not alot of air circulation and they had problems blowing head gaskets, getting head gaskets to seeal so it wouldnt fill the piston up with oil. they even had so many problems with deutz engines they went to thicker head gaskets, still blew, then had the torque spec for head bolts +120 degrees still having problems with them because of the severe temp irregularities the deutz "tech rep" said put a 6 inch pipe and a 1/2" breaker bar and blue torque them (pull till your blue in the face. suprisingly very suprizingly i did this and never had another head gasket fail before this we went through about 6 in 2 months. of course this was all back in the day dont know about newer items

we´ve had a Deutz F2L514, a Deutz D 4005 and a SAME Centurion 75 all with aircooled engines and never had any fire probs with them.
That an aircooled tractorengine can go up in fire is rubbish. You can´t compare a harvesting machine with a tractor, even no Wisconsin with a Deutz. Fire in combines or balers mostly is caused in a weak bearing and the times of motorized balers are long gone. Back to the thread: Rob is right, by advising the 06 or 07 range. Especially me would go with the D 5206 ( former D5506) or with the D 6206 (former D 6006) even D 5506 and D 6006 would be a good choice. They have been around here in lots abd a lot of them survived on farms, which own them since over 25 years.

I was a Deutz Dealer for 18 years and as far as durability etc. of the Deutz line you would have no worries. The engine is one of the best built and the rest of the tractor is considered one of the best engineered tractors on the market. Parts are very pricey if you go through an AGCO dealer, however most parts are available from independent dealers. I order parts directly from Deutz Corp. so if I can help you with anything feel free to contact me. Buy with confidence and enjoy. LOL 636-987-2411

The Deutz engines are pretty solid. We have them in our Bomag packers and Sheepsfoot rollers. Don't know anything about the tractors themselves.

I have a Deutz 4006D which is about 38 HP. 3 cylinder, 8 speeds forward, 2 reverse. What a great tractor, very fuel efficient, easy handling, probably the hardest working tractor on the farm. The only drawback I see is the cost of repairs. Be sure that you locate the dealer you will get repairs from before you buy the tractor. I would buy another one in a minute if I needed a tractor in this size class.

Deutz are German made. Other than that I don't know much, but they have been around for a long time in foreign countries.

Deutz tractors were in this area 35 years ago.Man down the road had one, about 100 hp with a 6 cylinder diesel, not sure but they said it was air cooled. It was a tough tractor, worked the day lights out of it. But they never did catch on.Now a few dealers selling some of the smaller ones here and there. As far as the Perkins, very dependable, hard engine to beat.

I've been around 4 of them..

motors on all 4 exellent with lots of hours of use.

but all 4 had rear end problems... 1 has busted the quill shaft 3 times.. and the owner has just parked it.. starts it every year sometime just to keep it running..

all of these owners complained about parts.. first waiting on them--one took 4wks to get and then paying for them
