2240 JD problem while plowing

Yesterday I was plowing with a 3 bottom Dearborn plow using my JD 2240 MFWD tractor. Once when I raised the plow out of the ground at the end of the field the shaft where the left lower lift arm pivots from broke completely off. I"ve ordered a new one from ytmag parts but am wondering if this tractor is big enough for what I"m trying to do or if the shaft had been stressed or cracked previously. Anyone ever broke one of these before? Any opinions on whether or not a 2240 should be able to handle a 3 bottom, 16" plow?

I am located in the Pacific Northwest, we have silt clay soils mostly, some sandy loam. Around here we estimate 25hp/plow, which puts you below the norm. The draft control system on your 2240 should not allow the shaft to break however. Under the seat if you reach down with your right hand you will find a control with the marks L-LD-D, the system is designed to lift the implement when the shaft you have described is bent under a heavy load (L) it will react in part when set at (LD) and its all you in (D). If you are grossly under powered the tractor would slip or not be able to pull these plows. I suspect you had a stressed load control shaft or just a bit of bad luck. When you replace the shaft do yourself a favor and replace the seals as well, you might even consider replacing the bushings if you have the time. I have a 2240 and routinely use implements that weigh in between 700 and 1000lbs so I don't think weight is an issue.

Not being smart here, cause I couldn't, but what you need is a right good Farmall M, and git-er-done, Harley
