On a mounted picker, the more hp the better. We had a 227 on a 620 and with a big wagon behind and muddy field conditions, the 620 had all it wanted to do to keep going in low or second at best. Then when you would open up a field, and get hung up in a mud hole, then what to do, can't back up and can't go ahead. Get another tractor and back up behind the wagon and pull it backwards far enough and then hope you can back the tractor and picker out of the hole, and if not---I hate the thought. Ahhhh, the good old days.

That is why you are supposed to turn the tires around and run them backward so if you start to spin then you have traction to back out and before that will happen you have the front wheels balled up in mud

It might physically fit,but it won't have enough power to run the picker and move itself, much less pull a wagon. You don't have powertrol so you have no way of lifting the picker. Also the rear axles aren't strong enough to support all the weight with the wheels reversed and all the way out on the axles.Even with a late A,a 227 picker is a mouthfull, especially in wet ground or hilly terrain with a 1/2 full wagon.Best option for a 227 is a late 60,or 620,and make sure the tractor has the engine screens, and exhaust shield on it.

MSM,

I watched my dad completely wear out one of those 227s on a 50 and the 50 is acutally less horsepower than a '51 B. 'Course the nearest "hill" of any size was something like 7 miles away. :>)

That whole cradle lifts off the rockshaft, doesn't it? I don't remember the thing even using a cylinder, but I was just a pup back then too and was always in school when he mounted or took the thing off.

We have hilly ground.Dad had a 52 A and when we picked the hills he would change wagons when they got half full.Tractor would power out or spin out,if the wagon got too full. Also got real good at changing axles, probably broke 3 or 4 on the A and a couple on the 60. Around 1965 he went to a 237 with a drum sheller on a 3020,no more axle problems, but a real PITA to mount and dismount.

Allan, The 50 is rated at 31HP if a gas tractor and the B is rated at 28HP on gas so unless you had an all fuel 50 and comparing it to a gas B then the 50 has more power and the 50 has about a 3" axle while the B is about 2 1/4" axle.. I ran one on a 51 A for many a year and john Deere never made brackets for a B altho a friend when he bought a 227 last year somehow got it on a B to get it home, was wanting to later put it on an A. Now the predesser of the 227 was the 226 picker and that was made to fit a B or A but was too heavy for a B but the B had enough power but could not keep it from boiling with the picker on. Used that 226 1 year but the 227 many a year and the hardest part of mounting the 227 was changing the wheel tread, reversing the wheels. the picker actually lifted itself on

I was pretty young when the 226 was being used, but remember it being a very heavy/ackward machine. It wouldn't lift high enough for the front wheels to turn much, and was a bear to mount. We broke several rear axles on the 44 A running that one. Had several 227's after that and run them on everything from A's through 730's. A B would have a bad time with one of those in this country. 90% of the ground around here is hills and terraces.

that 226 had a roller on each side for the front wheels to rub against when turning. I think the 226 was actually lighter in weight than the 227 but the 227 was easier to mount. I still have the operators manuals for both with the parts books.

"Always in school" when he mounted or de-mounted the picker? Sounds like me...my standard comment when someone says they have moving to do or a project to work on, "I'll be out of town that day".
