Recently purchased 1945 BN. Was not running when purchased. Has been converted to 12v. Has condensor, coil, no points, but part of mag. is missing. What am I working with and what do I need to look for?

That tractor came from the factory with magneto ignition. Some were converted to battery ignition by mounting a coil beside the magneto and using the points & distributor of the magneto. Sounds like what somebody may have done on yours.

You can get another magneto & make it original. They used an International H-4 magneto which are readily available and quite reliable, or you can get aftermarket conversion kits made by Delco and others to do a proper battery ignition conversion.

The same magneto & battery ignition componants were used on A's, B's, BN's, C',s, H's, M's and others so you should have no trouble finding parts. Just don't get a magneto from an MD, they turn backwards.

You first gotta figure out just what ignition is on her. If its a Magneto, they are self powered requiring no battery connection, it may be a Wico Model X or C or an AP or a Fairbanks Morse??? They also used a Wico XB battery powered distributor on some B's that resemble the Wico X Mag from the outside but theyre battery powered internal coil distributors NOT mags and the points are hidden under a plate.

Do you mean it has an external regular looking coil??? Sometimes the Mags were converted to battery powered distributors by using an external battery n switch fed coil and using the old mags points. Are there switch fed ignition power wires to the ignition unit or coil??

If its a mag instead of a battery powered coil ignition, they make a loud sharp SNAP as the flywheels cranked over, yours do that??? The battery powered coil ignitions or Wico XB ignitions DO NOT make any such snap.

Look it over for model numbers etc and let me know what you find plus answer some of my questions n maybe we can finger her out.
