Here in Western., Pa. I get several every year. I just walk along slowly, into the wind. In 40 years of hunting I have taken most as they get up to see what I am. They are kind of like rabbits. If you jump one and miss it, they will be back in a couple of days, just come back to the same spot. They are not a real smart animal.

Hi Old,

30yrs ago I was bow hunting elk in Colorado and came to a small clearing and I could here a crashing in the trees coming towards me so I stood still beside a tree.

Well a squril couldn't stand that was in his area so he started chattering a few trees away. Well I didn't move and this made him nervous so he kept coming closer to my tree.

I can still here the bull walking towards me while this squril is going nuts.

This darn squril came down the tree I'm next too and tried to get on my shoulder just chattering like crazy in my ear.

Now he's got me to thinking he's going to scare off my bull as I can't here the bull walking no more, so I un-nock my arrow to take a swing at the squirl and just as I swing the arrow I see a beautiful 5 point (that's a ten pointer for you Texans..lol) bull watching me from 45yrds accross the meadow and of course he ran off when he saw me move as well as the squril left.

I hunted for two hours for that squirl and he never made another peep.

Around here, if you drive up and down a few roads from dusk until about 2 hours after dark you would stand a pretty good chance of finding one with your front bumper.

I havent had much trouble shooting deer in recent years, but this year I planted organic soybeans and am over run by the critters. They eat my beans I eat them.

If a deer is nervous or running I'll make sound like a runny nose and they stop to watch the gun go off. It's worked everytime over 20 years now. Clay.

For the record, I'd like to say that I was joking when I said that you should drink beer while you hunt.

Any person that drinks while he's using a firearm deserves to get shot.

That's just plain stupid.

Guys that drink and hunt are much more dangerous than the gun control crowd.

Thats I sort of agree on, I do agree drinking and guns don't mix and should never be done. But when I asked the question I also was expecting true/real answers and ways to help with the hunt.

As an avid bow and black powder hunter I like to get in close. My favorite trick is to use Tampons. They make great scent wicks. Tampons are sent free and sterile and come in their own sent free package, they also have their own string to hang them up in a tree, or use to drag behind for a scent line.

Just drive to where you want to hunt and then sit in the cab of the tractor. They aren't affraid of tractors, they know that they can run faster and probably never been shot at from one. About fifteen years ago I got some nice pictures of a beutiful muley buck and he let me drive up to him within twenty yards. He stayed still for about five minutes and then walked away. I know mule deer are different but sunday I was out in the pasture with the tractor picking up round bales and saw a doe with an average sized buck and then a big buck came along. I was within a 100 yds. of the the two deer and drove within fifty of the big one. None of the deer got excited at least not from the tractor. I was interesting though watching the three of them.

But in a lot of stats its not legal to sit on or be near any type of motor powered machine and shoot a deer. But then theres been a number of other post talking about drinking and hunting which also is not a good idea. Guess I should have said legal tricks LOL.

Trick is to open all your beer cans when you first get to the stand. That way you won't keep disturbing things.

My best deer hunting trick/tip is to let someone else hunt my land. They always give me some venison and I don't have to sit out in the bushes(and freeze) to get it. Works evry time!

HI Myrl

I'M small western Pa farmer. I looking into this some after talking to a farmer I meet at an auction. 51% of your income has to come from farming, To be aloud to shoot deer. The law was changed back in 94, and again in the later 90's. On a Good Note! The farmer I was talking to fought the PAGC , his friends and him where all fined and they said we have a right to protect our porperty, They won over the Game Commission. He was shooting and give the deer away, he had shot; to people that would use them. Cost for them was around 7,000 back in 2003 and some 2 years. But he gave the PAGC a red face!! WHen I called them about turkeys eating my wheat I seeded, and the 275+ bats in the barn, I was told your not aloud to do anything. I was gald to hear that one group was able to fight and win thair case. For I live in an area that would be hard for me to do too much without getting nailed, but I have different groups shooting some 20-30 deer a year within a mile of the farm, one of the only farms left in our Twp. so I told the friends that hunt to shoot any and all deer that they can tag and use. I told them the deer will move in from other areas to eat, so no need to try to control the does or let a nice young buck pass in hopes that it would be nicer next year. And as for there rack law that is a joke, I have not seen bigger bucks but small junk by the dozens, Lucky now to see one nice buck a year, maybe see a very nice one(Wall hanger) , the other 12 or so are junk now and most not shootable. 10 years ago I would be lucky to see a spike now it is common, and no not a dumb town person, I can tell differents between a spike that is 4" and one that is above the ears by 4 " , and the 3 points , 5 points that are 1.5 years and should be nicer than they are.

It seems that if I drive down M-15 (michigan road) I will see one about once per week, of course last year I hit one, with my car. I hunt with my car...got a good sized doe last year. Of course it was $2400 in damage. You would think that those *amn deer would look both ways before running into traffic.

Im thinking of putting a gun rack on my tractor and taking that into the woods. Pretty much always see deer and the tractor doesn"t appear to scare them. Then again, if I carry a gun, where the heck is the deer? Can"t win.

Get one everytime, Drive down the road in a new car. Last three I've bought I got a deer in the first month.

Best way to see them, Don't have a weapon. We were setting up stands and scouting last year. Must have seen a herd of 30 move in in the morning, mill around most of the day, and move on towards the eve. This on 4 seperate days. All week (gun) 1 squirrel, 2 chip munks, and a fox. Not a stinking deer one.

Oddest trick,
Friend of mine's brother swears by smoking. Says he gets set waits bout half day and lights up. They come to see what it is. Curiosity(sp) kills the cat thing? Personally I think he's nuts, but he always tags out in the first couple days?????

Yep been told I will not get a deer if I'm smoking. Well almost all the time I have a smoke in my mouth when the deer walk up. At least where I live they don't seem to care if I smoke or not but then I do smoke all over the place on the farm so maybe its just something there usto.

The best sure fire trick is simply to know the country like your backyard then just sit on a trail between the bedding and feeding areas. Been doin this alot of years and can usually fill my tag. I make me a couple of nice comfy stands with a cushioned seat, back rest ourt of old wood odds and ends well in advance of deer season. I love to still hunt but the above method never fails me but still hunting often does.

I use a grunt call and ended up getting a 8 point buck last weekend. you can make 5 or 6 different tones with this depending what you want to call in (does, bucks, fawns)etc. it works for me...in the rut or not.

I like to use the door of a small pickup versus a full size. Pushing bush with a full-sized door gets to be heavy, and the new ones don't have a crank to roll down the window to shoot out of, so you have to carry a battery too.

Why push bush? Just hunt from the road.

I find that it helps if you are drinking bud in cans.

I always thrown the cans on the road afterwards. Seems to help.
