I have some oily residue accumulating at the top of the radiator on a 52 Ford 8N. Also blowing some white smoke on acceleration. I suspect head gasket. Is replacing the head gasket an easy job or should it be left to the experienced mechanic. Never changed one before. Anyone give me some tips on what to expect. Would it be harmful to run it this way?

You also should follow the bolt sequence (either in your manual or check the N board for a copy) to tighten the head. Theres a sequence to follow. Also when I did mine I started her up and ran it 5-10 mins, then let it cool and retorqued. Its really easy besides the hood/tank removal.

It is a prettu common problem with the 8N tractor. It is not hard to do at all, but you must remove the hood and gas tank as has been said. You will need to put some high temp sealant on the threads of some of those head bolts, as they go though to the water jacket. Make sure to thoroughly clean the engine deck and head mating surfaces, and put the new gasket in dry. Tourqe the bolts down to 65-70 lbs, then again when you warm it up, then once again after a few hours of run time.

It really is a piece of cake.

Good luck,
Dan

Try to find why the gasket failed if that is the problem and repair as necessary. Replace as per the gasket manufacturer"s and the workshop manual instructions. Otherwise you may be practising this job again, shortly.

Well if your getting water/antifreeze in to one or more cylinders then its very hard on it and can even cause you to loose an engine. On an 8N its not to bad a job to replace the head gasket. You do need to remove the hood/fuel tank and you need to have a torque wrench.

Might be a good time to check the head for flatness and cracks while its off the tractor. Depending on what your compression was before this a valve grind might be in order. Easier to do it now than latter.
