What's the safest method when cleaning mating surfaces when putting the tractor back together? Especially the head gasket surfaces. I'm getting ready to sandblast some pieces to paint and figured that the mating surfaces need to be protected. However, how does one clean and smooth these surfaces?

ps Dell thanks for the info on removing hydraulic piston.

I have a flat board sander that I use to dress the head and block with. Have to be careful not to get real agressive with it but it works well and is MUCH faster than hand sanding.

I was thinking about steel wool. Has anybody tried that?

Steel wool works ok if you have all the old gasket off but it doesn't do much to any gasket that might still be there. Thats why I use the wire wheel on a drill.

Before I put a new head gasket on, I spray the surfaces with ether and wipe with clean cloth. To get old gasket, dirt and rust I use a air right angle die grinder with roloc discs this works really great!

Brake cleaner to get rid of any grease or oil, Putty knife to scrape the old gasket, wire brush and die grinder also clean the studs at this step, Blow clean, another dose of brake cleaner and a clean shop rag wipe off May be overkill but have not had a head gasket leak yet
