Don't know what all problems ,ya had with scammers. But I'm really ticked. I put my Miller Maxtron welder in the classified adds.At $1000.00 or trade for a old rough tractor. Which is well under priced, according to most .It was only used 1 year and has been in storage in the dry in a box since 97. Well I had several replys (2) which really intrested me. One guy was going to trade me a 1947 M that ran good had poor rubber, needed paint, and had as he said the usual M problems of 6 volt system. I told him I would accept his Offer. Now he won't anwser a E-mail or phone call. The second said if I could find a tractor
near me I liked he would pay for the tractor, Well i Did $500.00 . I told him if he bought it and gave me $250.00 cash I would give him the welder. Now he says that he can't come up with that much money but wants the welder. So now I turned off all the other traders, And here I set. Some People.

Seems to me you made this deal way too complicated, and you got the results that I would expect. Just sell your welder outright, which will probably bring at least $1500, maybe more. Then shop for the tractor your WANT. Keep life and buying and selling simple.

Look at the bright side, you still have your $1000+ welder. You were willing to deal, which attracted the "something for nothing" crowd, but you came through unscathed. Unfortunately, also unsold.

I have read recently where scammers would mail you a MO that was written for too much, and ask for a refund for the difference. After the refund was given, you would find that the original MO was fake and you were responsible for the refund. (Thanks BustedupCowgirl.)

Ebay is a good sales site, but be prepared to pay as much as 15% of the sale price to eBay.

Try again, but do not hold the item or allow negotiations. Your price has already taken into account the fact that you wish to move it. First come, first serve. Make sure checks clear before allowing pickup. Tell Mr. "I'll Have the Money Tuesday" to call back on Tuesday. Heck, post it here, just be sure to include your location.

About 30 years ago I was looking to buy a few items from this old scrap yard. There was another guy looking at one of the same items I was and he was first. He told the owner of the yard he wanted to get the items but wouldn't be able to pay for them or get them till the next day. The owner looked at the guy and said, money talks and BS walks. Long story made short, the owner sold the items to me. Now I don't remember what I bought but I'll never forget that money talks and BS walks and in my opinion that's the only way to deal, buying or selling.

I have dealt with the public since I was a teenager, and there have always been "wannabes", and others who can't or won't conclude a deal. Yet, I have managed to make a living of sorts, and meet a heck of a lot of wonderful people through purchases and sales of vehicles and machinery.

I'm in northern ND, and have sold vehicles and machinery as far away as CA and FL, and some stuff that's gone up into Canada.

You have to get used to expecting a few crackpots, and learn to never feel too certain about a deal, until you have "cash in hand", but going beyond that, there's a lot of GOOD people, too, some of which will lead to another purchase or sale, through contacts they have.

Heck of it is though, if a guy really needs to move something, for quick cash, it can be frustrating to deal with situations like you encountered. It's nice to stay in the cash position of only having to sell when the right (and $$$$) oportunity comes along, and not to have to worry about the "wannabes". I wish I could always stay in that position!

I can make a trade deal with you that wont go bad. I have a bunch of tractors that I would let you chose from. About twenty in my side yard that keep the snow from blowing on over to the neighbors. I am way up north of you. clear to the north west corner of Ohio. I have a Case 800 LP that just does not blend in with the rest. I have an Oliver super 77 that I would let go down the road. If you want red I have a McCormick 10-20 on steel I will never get to the way things are going at this time.

Maybe you'd better keep the welder. Who wants old tractors anyway?
