Old,

I don't know you and never walked in your shoes, and can't say what's goin on there, but sure would miss your help and input. I always was a selfish son of a gun, and guess that I always will be.

Good luck in your decision, and I hope that it turns out to be the right one for you.

You know who I haven't seen here in a long time? Mark from Texas (TXBLU/TXGRN). What ever happened to him? There's another old YT friend that I miss.

Mark

I'd say you'd probably be looking for a 5' bush hog and maybe the same for a box scraper? I'd say you'd start around nothing below 35HP and up to 50HP would be good. Couldn't tell you how much your trailer would hold. but one you get a loader on them . . . they're a bit heavier then what most people think. I don't know what everyone else would suggest, but a CASE 430 is a good, strong, suitable first tractor. Paul

Stick around buddy, we need you here for all of the info that you contribute to the boards. I know that I about gave up myself as I was diagnosed with cancer in October. I had an operation in December and I think I have it beat. I have already gotten rid of all of my tractors (5) and a power unit in 2 years. I used to tractor pull and was gone every weekend during the summer to something. Now I will have to go out in the country this spring before the weeds and leaves get to growing with my binoculars and see what I can spot in the fence rows and timber for new projects. There is nothing like taking the challenge of getting an engine or piece of machinery running that was put out to dry by someone else and putting life back into it and saying "It's not your time to go yet." Hang in there buddy....deadeye.. Jack Blaylock, Cresco, Iowa....64 years young.

Having a single hobby has never worked for me. Working on the same project or job, day after day, get"s really old. I think having variety makes all of the difference. (Told that to my girlfriend but she didn"t seem very sympathetic . . )

Sometimes you just have to shut something down, and go on to something else for awhile. I find it amazing sometimes how different something seems when you come back to it after a few days, a few weeks, whatever it takes. I"ve also found the tales of other"s projects on sites like this get"s me interested again.

Give it a break.

Old: Like the other fellows say, step back for a while. A month, a year. I picked up a few other hobbies, small ones that don't cost huge bucks that I can pick up and put down in a minute. It helped. Switching around lets you make new contacts, talk to other people. Good luck. Winter doesn't help. Hell as a hot place came from the culture of desert people. Hell is not hot. Hell is cold.

old-

Know how you feel; sometimes I wonder why I'm doing this. But then I just step back away from it all for a few days or weeks and the change of scenery/pace is a big help and then I find myself back on the tractors again. So give it a break for awhile but don't bail out. You'll regret it.

I'll tell you one conclusion I've arrived at though; I like to get my tractors all mechanically up to par but I've quit feeling that they have to look like an "expo quality" tractor. That's fine for those who want to do that but I appreciate an honest, mechanically good, working tractor more than a "trailer queen." For instance: we will be taking tractors to the local mall for "Farm Days in February. I told my son last night that this year I'm taking "Lucy," our mechanically good, straight and sound 52 JD B. She doesn't have a fresh coat of paint; rather, she looks like a 54 year old working tractor would look---clean but with faded green. Time for the "mall yuppies" to see what an honest ractor looks like!

Old,
Just remember that there are young people that are coming into antique tractors that don"t have the knowledge like yourself. And if you let it go, there will be one less to share the know how!
And I would be one of the younger one"s. Mike from MI

I went thruogh the same thing a few years back. Sold all the tractors and started buying old toys. Bought some new and some old ones and fixed them up. They take up a lot less room, easier to work on, and are kinda fun. Now, I'm selling them and am back into the old tractors. Sometimes, ya just gotta kick back and take a breather, and do something different.

Hi old,
Just wanted to share something here. I have been posting on this board pretty much since it came into existence. Then I asked more than I answered, then you could find an old trctor and buy it a couple hundred bucks, then money was the object,I could go on and on.A couple of years ago, when I posted under another name,I had considered giving it all up,you and a few others convinced me not to so I didnt.A couple of years has gone by and things are still heading in the direction of MONEY!those with money on here flaunt it,those that dont have as much money are pushed to the back, put down, and are left to feel stupid and unneeded. This also hold true for shows and such and last year I had one of those type of incidents. Theres one feller at several shows we attend that is just a flat out sob just because he has thick wallet. What does all of this mean? Well, I had forgotten what it was all about to me,these two kids sitting here at the kitchen table eating their Fruit Loops!!!! My kids mean more to me than some jacka$$ with more money, here or at a show somewhere.Point is, dont give up something you enjoy because youre feeling down about the hobby.

Don't know about you, but I was thinking just yesterday I've been spending a disproportionate amount of my life inside old tractors lately. So what did I do?

Went out in the pm and bought a parts crawler (Cat) and an old Galion motor grader. Then I went back to working on the Cat loader brakes to get it ready to haul the parts crawler up to the shop. Damn, those wheels are heavy (17.5x25) Would you believe Cat was cheaper for the wheel cylinders than NAPA?

Internet's another matter though. What're you gonna do, spend all your time shopping with the wife?

Didn't Tom T. Hall do a song about those topics? Wasn't the title "Older Horses, Faster Women, Younger Whiskey, and More Money".

I know how you feel. I move back and forth between websites/forums for my car, then to the 51 IH pickup, then to old tractors, then to old engines, and start all over again... not necessarily in that order either.

Sometimes you can get too much of a good thing and it seems bad. Take a little break, then come back - works for me.

To John M, to Old and to all of y"all. John, we dont have any(well not much)and we dont feel put down.

Old, because of health concerns I chose to retire, sell out and move south. I miss working on the old tractors puttering around the place. I had two tractors spotted back in the trees that I would have liked to have made to run.
But I do get to spend more time on yt.

Ok guys,I thought it was older wimmin and more whisky.
