We baught a John Deere B from a huge consignment tractor sale. It had been sitting for a long time but it was still loose. We put a battery and fresh gas in it and pull started it. It did start, but it knocks really loud and smokes white(ALOT!)It also didn't have very much power, but still have enough to drive it. The pistons looked fine and just one valve was stuck some. We thought that it may be in the clutch, so we tore in. Broke the disc drive. Currently we have the head off, the pistons out, and everything still looks fine, besides the normal wear and tear. Tomorrow we are going to take some measurements to see just how much wear there is. I really couldn't find anything that would be making it knock this loud. It also didn't have very much power. Does anybod have any ideas??? HELP!!!

Go over to the Deere board and ask about a taper lock for the flywheel.

My 1950 B knocked and I found a loose flywheel. I plastigauged the rod bearings, everything else seemed good, but I was able to tighten the flywheel, and the noise stopped. John, PS, JD originally made a special wrench to tighten the pinch bolts on the flywheel.

Ours started knocking really bad too. Turned out the flywheel worked loose. Tightened it up, and things worked OK for a while - Now hammering again. Haven't had time to look into it, but another person on this board had similar problem, and one of the recommendations was to use JB weld to help hold flywheel tight.

Hi Ray,

I've never been able to get JB Weld to hold anything.

When those flywheels get loose, they need to be repaired as soon as possible 'cause they really start to wear away in a hurry.

If tightening the the cinch doesn't cure it, the flywheel needs to be replaced. Very common problem on those old Johns.

I had the same problem on one. Tore it all down, checked all the tolerances, and it was fine. Turned out to be the valves were out of time and the engine was firing with valves slightly open making for a heck of a racket. You might check that.
