Well, I might have located the tractor I've been looking for over the last 6 months or so.

A 1972 International 656 Diesel with a White Quick Attach loader for $5,495.

It is at Swiderski Equip Inc. in Wausau, Wisconsin. It's not perfect and isn't going to win a beauty contest but the loader looks decent and being a QA is a big plus and it being a diesel is a plus too.

They took it in on a trade and don't really know much about it. Tires are poor but will last a little while. The guy wasn't sure if the TA was good or not. He's going to take some more pictures for me and start it up and see if the TA works. I forgot to ask about the brakes.

Here are the pictures I have and the description.

And here is the description from the ad:

1972 INTERNATIONAL 656, S/N: 049557, Stk #: 01IH2444, 4908 hours, 56 hp, 2WD, IH 656 WITH WHITE 1730QA LOADER. 56 HP, 540 PTO, 2 REMOTES, 72" BUCKET $5,495

From talking with them I think I can get it a little cheaper. Hopefully I can get a good hauling price as it is 1,314 miles from me! I've gotten a couple quotes as low as $1.00 a mile from Pennsylvania before but Wisconsin may be a little farther off the beaten track.

Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Nathan

More pictures - 656 Diesel w/ QA Loader in reply to Nathan in Texas, 03-03-2006 08:35:41
Okay, they sent me some more pictures. It looks a little rougher in these pictures but still not too bad. If anyone sees anything specific from the pictures that I need to get inspected let me know. Thanks!

Be very CAREFUL here. I do not wish to start a fight but here goes. The dealership is fine. I live in a surrounding state. I am a former livestock farm owner-operator who now row crops and is in tractor restoration. If it came from a livestock farm leave it there. The bucket and muffler tell the story. I have purchased a few Wis. livestock farm antique tractors and they were each a money pit worse inside than out and they looked tough. Your tires don't match, oil leaks, and please drive it I bet there are mech. issues. Livestock operators do not trade something unless it does not work I was one remember.

that 656D should have more than 56 HP. That is what my 544D puts out. Looks in pretty rough shape for the price. I would keep looking. you get on ironsearch and look. There are alot out there. Just about every used tractor dealer in MN has one. I personally would get a hydro or a model that has more then just the 1 reverse, like the 656D. My 2cents

Avg price for 656 on ironsearch = $6,416 in reply to Dave from MN, 03-03-2006 14:06:50
I did another quick look on www.ironsearch.com.

There were 29 different 656's listed with asking prices from $9,000 to $3,500. The average asking price was $6,416. That was including diesel and gas tractors and most of those did not have a loader. Most of the lower priced ones were gas engines with narrow fronts and fast hitch with no loader. The diesel's seem to go a little higher than the gas versions and the wide front and 3 point hitch seems to add value as well. The quick attach loader for sure adds value to me.

Hopefully I will get someone lined up to inspect it this weekend and I already have a good quote on shipping if I get it.

Thanks again for the input though, I'm trying to factor everything in.

I really have been looking for a while and on the surface this looks like a decent tractor at a decent price.

Maybe some of you haven't been shopping for a tractor in a while?

I think you could do better personally. If you go to auctions you can find loader tractors like that for sometimes less. The price isn't bad, but being so far away for you and not being able to look it over and drive it, I'd stay away from it. Even at a $1 a mile, thats really going to drive up the price for you, well $1,300 exactly, now after figguring in that $1,300 more to the price, that tractor isn't really such a bargain. You said you are not mechanically inclined, so if there is problems with it, such as a bad clutch or ??, I suspect you will have to hire it done, and thats not cheap. If you look at the picture of the rear, you can see there is oil all over the back of the tractor, thats one concern. Something else I notice is the left rear wheel has been turned inside out, people usually do that when they got a rear main axle seal leaking, so it doesn't leak all over the wheel. That bucket looks like it might be beat up, you can't see the cutting edge or the bottom of the bucket to see what sort of shape thats in, but the top of the bucket is all bent up. Those rear tires don't look like they have very much tread left. No, thats no bargain, and I don't believe there no tractors in that size in your area. A few equipment sites you might try for something closer are www.fastline.com
www.machinefinder.com
www.equipmentlocator.com

I guess I should have said there are no medium sized loader tractors around here. I can find medium sized tractors around but by the time I add a loader to them I'm going to be well over the price including shipping for that one.

I asked about the oil on the back end and the guy said it was just built up grease and there wasn't a significant leak but that does seem like a lot of oil. I was wondering why 1 wheel would be turned in and 1 would be turned out. Maybe it does have a axle leak. The bucket does look a little beat up.

I've been looking on the CaseIH used equipment locator site, Ironsearch.com and TraKtorhouse.com (with a C but the YTmag folks don't like that site name).

They quoted me a price that is enough under the listed price that I can make a good dent in the hauling price hopefully.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that they guy looking at it for me will give a thumbs up on it.

Thanks for the input.

Nate,
I am in Wis. Rapids... 50 mi. from Wausau.
I do not want to get in the middle of a tractor deal but could be available to do some foot work etc. I am retired (62yo)& have farm exp as a youth. I grew up on dairy farm here. I am a Deere guy, live in town, retired hobby in Deeres, old engines & garden tractors. I have not delt w/ Swiderski but know of others who have. They are good honest people (at least to locals). My Bro-in-law bought a Ford compact from them and was pleased w/ all dealings. I have never been to they place but would not mind taking a ride up there some nice early spring day.

Ken,

I don't want to have you drive 100 mile round trip just to look at the tractor, but if you are heading that way sometime this week (The week of March 6th) I might see about getting you to check on it for me. If you are heading that way let me know. I can pitch in enough to pay your gas and buy you and your wife a good dinner or something.

Thanks, Nathan

Thanks for the offer Ken. You are the 2nd person to say good things about the dealership.

I think I already have someone lined up that knows the Salesman there and they were going to talk with him tomorrow maybe. I'm also going to try to get a local equipment man to do an inspection for me. I just posted requesting a hauling quote for it also. Maybe this will work out.

Are they rare enough and do you really want one bad enough to risk all the pitfalls of buying a tractor 1300 miles away. If so, and if it were me, I think I'd invest a little more time and money and go see/drive it in person before buying.

Re: I think I found a tractor! in reply to John (MO), 03-03-2006 09:01:56
They aren't rare at all. There just aren't many medium sized tractors with loaders within 300 miles of me. That price is a little lower than most places are asking. Mostly I think I am just tired of looking to be honest.

As far as going and looking it over, I don't know if I am technically competent enough to really be able to tell much. I've thought about hiring someone to go look it over for me but not sure how that would work with it being at a dealership. I had someone from a dealership go look over a tractor a guy had for sale in Indiana one time and that seemed to work well, but I would have to hire someone from another dealership to look at it and that could be ackward for everyone.

I do appreciate the input, maybe I'm just looking too hard at price and not at the entire picture.

Thanks, Nathan

The thing is, once the tractor gets 1300 miles away, even the very best dealer isn't going to feel much need to help you out. If he isn't the best dealer, well you can see where he might love to find a long distance buyer. Check on the IH part of this board, there might be a fellow poster who lives right down the road from the dealer. Maybe you could have him go look while you talk it over on the phone. Might not cost you more that a steak and a beer.

I agree with John. Never buy one unless you can be there to check it out and drive it. I've been had several times by taking someone's word for it and got bad deals. I could not lie over a tractor but some people can.
