I bought a 1955 Ford 650. Colors are red & grey. Engine shows areas that were blue and have been painted over with red in a poor restoration attempt. Serial numbers on transmission indicate 1955 vintage. Engine was oviously painted over in some areas. When did ford change over to blue engines? Ford dealer says it is an early 55 model. Certified tractor machanic says engine may not be original. What say you?

What makes your mechanic think the engine is not original? One way you might be able to tell the relative age of the engine is from the casting code on the right side of the block. If it starts with the letters EAE it is likely an original engine. Later blocks had different codes. I'm not expert on all the Ford engine block casting codes, but there are guys on the Ford discussion board that are.

As for color, it was common in the sixties for a dealer to repaint trade ins to match the current color scheme. The thinking was it would make them "look newer" and therefor sell better. Apparently someone decided to return the tractor to the original colors, but didn't do a very good job of it.

1962, was when Ford went blue, I believe. (How about that, blue in sixty two, it even rhymes) The tractors (2000 series) were essentially the same as the 1955 600, same old gal in a new dress, so to speak. Could be maybe your engine was a 1962-64 swapped in?
