Hi, simple question that I am sure has been asked before...
I am looking to buy a double axle trailer that has mobile home axles...one of the axles has brakes on it. I will haul a 4,000 lb tractor on it.

I would like to use the brakes on the trailer to save the brakes on my F150. My truck has a brake controller under the dash from a previous owner, but it runs to a single prong hookup under the rear bumper...the truck has a 4 flat hookup, while the trailer is a 6 pin round hookup.

What do I need to use them...a brake controller wired to a 6 pin hookup or will the trailer get it's brake power from my truck when the tail lights come on?
Thanks!

I suggest buying you a new trailer. You should be able to find a new one for less than $1k and it will have brakes. Mobile home axles are good axles, but the tire/wheel is only for the movement of mobile homes. The speed limit on a M/H is 45mph. You can convert the M/H hubs w/a hub w/8 lugs. They run about $150 per axle, then you have to buy new wheels/tires for the new hubs. The hubs and bearings will fit on the M/H axles. You use the back up plates w/brakes for the new hubs. But by the time you spend all this money for the conversion, you could all most have a new trailer. Don't ask why I know this....

If you can find me a trailer for $1,000, I will buy it. Around here, they arent that cheap. I use this trailer 4 times per year, I cant afford $3,000 just to let it set and rot in the rain.

I don't know where you are, but in TX you can find tag-a-long trailers for $650 and up. You can find trailers in the farm auctions for $1k or less. If you only use a trailer 4 times a week, you might consider renting a trailer. I bought a 26ft gooseneck trailer w/drop tail and only paid $2500 for it and it was new. Have a good one....

I'm not a big fan of mobile home axles they look like the others but are not. I had many brake problems with the ones I had the magnets would not hold up and the springs and shackles wear out real quick.

Do yourself a favor and get a regular trailer with regular brakes on both axles and get the torque flex axles with no springs or shackles. The prices of these has really came down over the years.

Any auto supply store such as Auto Zone or Advance Auto sells adapter plugs for a few dollars. You can get a plug that adapts your six prong truck outlet to the four prong trailer plug. No rewiring required.

Sounds like you are pretty much un-informed about trailers. You need to do a lot of research before buying any trailer. I think you will find that mobile home axles are not always acceptable, and the tire size used on those axles is sometimes very hard to find. Most states require brakes on all axles, not just one. As a final comment, before buying, check out the prices on brand new trailers, you may be pleasantly surprised, and you may also find that the asking price of the used trailer is way too high. I don't mean to be picking on you, but if I am going to be sharing the road with your truck and trailer, I want to be sure that your rig is up to the task.
