I took my diesel engine out of my IH 444 for rebuild. Can anyone tell me where I can get a pilot shaft to line up the clutches?

Likely, it is a little more complicated than some of the responses indicate, if it has a dual clutch (transmission and PTO).

It shouldn't cost too awful much to have a local machine shop make an alignment tool to fit the pilot bearing, the transmission clutch disc, and the PTO clutch disc.

Jim,

Auto parts stores have these tools in plastic. Suggest you take a clutch disc and see if you can find a tool that will line up with the splines, maybe take the pilot bearing. I don't claim to be a mechanic, but once I put a clutch in a 56 GMC truck. The procedure as I recall to do it without a lineup tool was to put the transmission part of the way in, leaving the clutch a little loose. Went in from the side and turned the clutch with a screwdriver and tightened the attaching bolts from the side, moving the transmission a little to get the shaft lined up. I probably have the details wrong and it might not work on the 444 anyway.

Those types of things often end up being done with wooden dowels, electrical tape, sockets, extension bars, power handles, or any other thing that will fit into the pilot bearing and be accurately shimmed out to the clutch hub diameter. Failing that, there's been more than one that was eyeballed.... not that I'm recomending that route. An old transmission input shaft is the slickest thing there is, if you have one, or if you pull it for some reason. There are special tools available, perhaps through NAPA, and certainly through IH, but most people make do with whatever is close at hand...

i found that if you take a file and take the burr of the splines of the clutch plate and try it on the shaft before youput it on the flywheel it helps alots old art
