I have a 26 HP Husky garden tractor built by MTD. My amp guage is in the negitive and I have to keep charging the battery on a charger. My Manuals do not show a generator only the starter, attached to the side of the 26 hp Briggs and Stratton OHV engine. My question is what charges the battery and where is it located?

Go to briggsandstratton.com with your model number and can find parts breakdown for your engine. Earlier twins had a few different types of alternators under the flywheel but I don't know about the 26HP but parts will tell you. You'll need a volt meter to check the output. Several of the discount chain stores carry the B&S engine repair manual CD and you can a more extensive one from local small engine dealer.

Many of those type engines have alternator windings under the flywheel and its a flywheel magnet passing by them that induces voltage in the series of coils. Then they have a rectifier block somewhere on the exterior to convert the AC into DC to charge the battery. Often when they stop charging its cuz the rectifier block goes bad,,,,, or an alternaotr coil winding might open,,,, or else there are wiring or fuse issues.
