Anyone heard of left handed diesel engine, I guess what he was refering to was runs in CCW direction, talking about an 871. I've never heard of such a thing. So I'm checking with the experts....So what say you? thanks

Any two stroke Detroit will swap rotation by swapping the balancer shaft and cam from side to side or end to end. As previously stated the oil pump and blower have to rotate in the proper direction. Model airplane two stroke engines run equally well in either direction. Ski-Doo instead of using a reverse gear. Just reverse the engine direction.

most if not all two cycles will run CW or CCW. But you have to make sure the oil pump is running in the right direction. Not sure on the 871 but the 671 the front and back of the engine are the same, so you can build them ever which way you like!A lot of detroits have been ruined by a driver stalling out on a hill, truck rolls backwards, and they let the clutch out, starting the engine and because the oil pump is running in reverse they burn the engine up!
Good luck
Ron

Yes, many marine engines especially older marine diesels (and gas) had one engine standard (ccw as viewed from the flywheel) and one clockwise, or reverse, rotation.

The marine reduction/reverse gears used could not handle full torque output in reverse, or had a different ratio in reverse, and twin screw boats use counter rotating propellers. Otherwise the torque of two props turning the same direction will cause the boat to list over to the side as it runs.

However in the 21 years I have been working on marine diesels 99.9% of them are both standard rotation (in a twin application) and one transmission is run in "reverse" and one "forward" but you"d not know from the control levers at the helm as the levers go "forward", the switch is made on the bottom end.

I know Detroit used their own Allison marine gears and they (I think) could not be run one forward and one reverse, hence the one left hand and one right hand engine.

Gasoline inboards that used Borg Warner "velvet drive" marine gears could not take full power in reverse or something like that- I have no real experience with those gears- but I have done tuneups on many american V8 marinized gas engines and when you ordered a distributor cap it was marked with the cylinder numbers for standard and reverse rotation.

I know the large 3500 series Cats can be ordered in reverse rotation.

I hope my gibbersih has not confused too many people.:)

im not sure of all the changes to make a jimmy run oposite but i do no that you have to put the timing gears on acording to the direction you want it to run as it will say in overhaul manual for left and right hand rotation

Thanks for the education. Just goes to show you never quit learning. It is always a good day if I can learn something new.

Most older Greyhound buses when equipped with a Certain Allison were left hand rotation. They can be V-6 (92) series) or V-8 Detoit. In fact some old books I used to have would give the firing order for both right and left hand rotaion. Years ago Detroit also msde a skid unit with 2 left hand rotating 6-71 engines hooked to a gear drive. The engines sat side by side and they connected to one output shaft through the gear train and the single output shaft was normal right hand rotation. We used to work on a fair number of left hand rotaion Chevie and Chrysler boat motors that were also left hand rotation

I was talking to a friend of mine that is retired as a mechanic on the Railroad one time about watching A Tug take the barges through the locks on the Arkansas River. I said it had 3 engines, and he told me they were the same engines the trains used and parts were stamped R or M and the ones stamped M were 10 times higher. He also said one engine turned the opposet direction to keep the tug from kreeling.

Probably MOST Detroits, and many Cummins can be spec'd in either rotation, to name 2 makes.

Yep most detroits and i believe some others were available as left hand or reverse rotation these were used mostly in marine and some bus configurations. fwiw . mike
