Just came into possession of an old Ferguson
TO-4024 which went with the property, as it has a few acres to mow with the (included, rusty) bush hog type deck.

No real tractor-time, since I was a kid just along for the ride, and clueless on what I need to get this machine running.

Charging battery now, loading grease-gun,
oil looks to need changing, diffy-dope looks low,
and I am embarrassed to say that I can't find the starter button nor hydraulic port (dipstick?)

Anyone willing to get a rank tractor newbie up and mowing would be MUCH appreciated.

A couple of things to add to the other excellent comments: don't leave your Fergie in gear when you shut it off. It will lock in gear quite easily and then you can't shift it to start without help.

Get the over-running coupler. I didn't and ended up terrified all of the time when running the bush hog. One badly sprained wrist from an encounter with a stump and the tractor belly-hung over a boulder were my only mishaps because of the fly wheel effect, though.

Mow early and often. It is nerve-wracking to drive blindly through 6' orchard grass at the speeds you need to go in order to mow the stuff.

Wash the dust out of the radiator vanes frequently with a garden hose and your Fergie won't overheat as much.

Enjoy.

Hey Thanks loads, Ron.
Great suggestions all, especially with your over-running coupler experience.

Got the Fergie running yesterday...new fuel cup
gasket trimmed out of an inner tube. Have fuel
leak just before the filter that needs attention.
Suspect that hydraulic oil is low, as the deck would not lift.

Thanks Again ~Paul

On my TO30 you have to lift slightly on the shift lever to get over to Start and Reverse, another safety feature.

Hmmm...This may be a TO-20 and without that feature, or possibly worn a bit, as I did not
notice having to do that when I started her yesterday. Seemed like she didn't fire until I switched to the 2nd key position.

Thanks, ~Paul

Paul,
Go over and ask in the Ferguson Forum-- you'll get lot's of replies there. I *believe* you have an early TO-20 judging by the serial number. My TO-30 has been modified to use a key switch and starter solenoid, but TO-20s and TO-30s both originally used the shifter to start the tractor. The shifter has six positions-- 1, 2, 3, 4, R, and S (for start). You shift over to 'S' and push the shifter forward to activate a push-type starter switch on the tranny bellhousing. You won't find a hydraulic dipstick-- the diffy, tranny, and hydraulics all use the same fluid (GL-1 gear oil is specified.)

As you are sitting on the tractor, the clutch pedal is on the left and the brakes are on the right. Don't trust your brakes too much until you've got a feel for them (on flat ground, please!) Also, don't bush-hog without an ORC (over-running coupler) or the energy stored in the bush-hog's flywheel may push you into a ditch, up a tree, through a fence, etc. because stepping on the clutch will NOT stop your tractor if it is directly coupled without an ORC.

You ought to get a manual to read first, and it would help if you could get a savvy neighbor or friend to help you get acquainted with your machine. Be careful, and ask lots of questions.

Darren

Darren

Thanks so much for your most informed comments!

Was able to crank the Fergie yesterday just fine,
although I did have to engineer a new fuel cup gasket, and need a piece of tubing to stop a leak just before the filter (which likely needs replacing as well). Likely low on hydro oil, as the stick shows, which may explain why the deck will not lift. Obviously, I DO need the operation and shop manuals, as you mentioned.

Any tips on where I might find an ORC?
I'm just south, in NW Georgia, so Tractor Supply would be a most obvious choice, eh?
Thanks Again, ~Paul

check the gear shift lever, some of them had a spot on them to start the tractor. That way it couldn't start in gear. been 30 years since I had a Fergeruson.

Thanks, Freddy

Indeed that is the start-slot.
Cranked just fine.
Tough ol' reliable tractor.
No wonder Admiral Perry took them to Antartica.

Your starter "button" is the gear shift lever- push it up and to the right and that will engage the starter. If the tractor has been sitting outside you'll want to change the oil in the hydraulic system /rear end. Buy ten gallons of NAPA p/n 65-205 and pull all three drain plugs in the back. Lots of details on the Ferguson section of this website.

Have fun! Grub

Much obliged, Grub

Got her started fine yesterday.
She's been under an open shed, so I wonder if the hydro oil just needs topping off, as I know the previous owner ran her last fall.

Kinda leaning towards changing the engine oil.
Any idea how much and what weight?
I'm in NW GA, so it can get warm here.

Thanks for your help, Grub.
Most kind of you to reply.

~Paul
