I see Nebraska has a new tourism slogan: "possibilities.. endless.." Are they serious? I always imagined Nebraska as a flatter and duller version of Kansas.

Maybe Alan and the Nebraska Cowman can fill us on the "endless possibilities" of Nebraska.

I spent some time in Omaha and traveled the eastern part of the state. Compared to what I've seen of Kansas, Nebrask wins hands down. Kansas was much flatter and didn't appeal to me. 'Course, I live in Tennessee and ain't plannin' on movin' either.

Hey, Give us kansans a break! We have just as pretty of country here, and are proud to be here. It might be flat to the west, but theres a lot of most anything you want here in the east part.

You're right; and I didn't mean to slam Kansas at all. For every area of the country there are positives and negatives. Being from the hills of East Tennessee I identify more with the hills and trees that you would probably associate with Eastern Kansas. Kinda like tastes in food. Some people like spicy food; others like things toned down a little. It's all good, though.

I lived in Kearney, Nebraska for 9 months and loved it. Have taken 3 vacations in Nebraska, one was on my honeymoon. It is a very beautiful state and a land of contrasts in colors and lay of the land. Some of my favorite areas/things/places I went to and remember are: canoeing the Niobrara river and standing under the 90 foot waterfall of Smith Falls, watching Sandhill Cranes on the Platte around Gibbon, camping on Lake McCanahay, hiking along Windlass hill and Chimney rock and Jailhouse rock. Buffalo national grasslands, the Sandhills, Pioneer Village, the Great Platte River Road exhibit at Kearney and the great wide open land. Wonder if I can get the wife talked into going out there again.....

Wil

A bee-u-tiful place is Nebraska! Acually I like it all over this great country. I was stationed in Omaha twice, fished, hunted and just went "looking" around. The part I remember best and talk about the most is the far north west corner. Biggest deer I ever got, and the coldest night I ever spent, (slept in the back of the 73 Int. travelall) was back in some of those broken canons. And being a dummy I had the camp on top. Great Pheasant and dove shooting too. Bob

Oh yeah don't scoff. I was born in northwest PA but left as soon as I got growed and I ain't goin' back. I still get goosebumps everytime I see this country. And they can keep their darn old rocky mountains too.

I dunno, Cowman. When it comes to tourism, I think I'd rather see landscape like this:

Of course, land like that is really tough to farm!

Jim,

Reminds me of that country up around Green River, Wyoming. Darned wind has blowed for so many millions of years, there is absolutely no topsoil at all and nothing grows. :>)

Yep, I think we have most everything here.

Fact is, it is raining today. Now, who would have ever expected rain out here, especially in the springtime? :>)

The only thing I really dislike about this state is the taxes. You are taxed on air, sunshine and 'bout every other darned thing it takes just to stay alive. I fully expect to get a dun in the mail taxin' me for 1/4" of rain. :>(

Allen,
If I can talk the wife into it the two of us and the Border Collies are going to vacation out there. Best not let me see one of those red tractors sitting around. I may have to get a little seat time. It has been awhile, miss it.

You get out here and I'll fix ya right up and give ya your choice of tractors. Heck, that's why I bought the darned place. :>)

Had a guy tell me yesterday that he was pretty sure he knew where my place was. Said he couldn't get there by any road, but he could see the red tractors by using his binoculars.

Told him, yep that's the place. :>)

only the farmer pays the taxes in the end. in reply to Allan In NE, 05-04-2006 15:26:32
TAX POEM

Tax his land, tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes are the rule.

Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his booze, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.

Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know,
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he’s good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
“Taxes drove me to my doom!”
And when he’s gone, we won’t relax,
We’ll still be after the inheritance TAX,

Hey,

There are two Nebraskas. One on the east end of the state and then the never, never land out here.

If ya like sunflowers and prairie, this is the place to be. :>)

Yep, it is totally dull. Some of us like it that way.

You"d be surprised by the varied culture of Nebraska. I drove for Double Circle Co-op back in the 70"s and was all over the state and there are a lot of different things to see. Up in the north, northeast is the Verdigre river area where now they are finding tons of dinasaur skeletons. O"neil is the Irish capital of Nebraska, good people, know how to put em down at Galen"s Bar and Grill. Wilbur is the Czeck capitol of the state, more good people. Minden has Pioneer village which is built around an old agricultural theme. Loup City is kinda in the middle of the state and is around the Loup River irrigation system, where a long canal was built back when for irrigating crops. You get out into the sandhills of west- central Nebraska and the roadsigns will say things like "Evans, 20 miles", or Miller 16 miles. Smith 14 miles. These are not towns. These are to peoples farms. Some of the kids go to school and stay in town all week and go home on weekends because of the distances involved. I"m sure I"m missing a lot of other stuff, but it is a nice place to visit, unless ya get up into the far, far northwest corner of no man"s land, then ya run into old reprobates with pretty red tractors and horseys and stuff out where every farm has it"s own tomcat, and you know how far a tomcat will travel. Just a little insight, Harley
