I will post this here because I know a lot of us have goats around. Was searching for a worming program for my daughter's Nigerian Dwarf goats and came across an article on-line that referenced using Ivomec 1% cattle injectable administered orally at 1 cc per 75 pounds of body weight. I have this on hand and have heard about using it orally on goats but have a certain amount of distrust of internet articles. Anyone can put something on a web page, you know. Have any of you used this method on your goats?

We had been using the Ivomec but our Boers developed a resistance to it. We are now using Levamisole Solution (13.65%) - Brand name Levasole.
It is listed for cattle but our vet recommends it as an alternative to Ivomec. Both are administered SQ and at 1.5 times the listed dosage (ie, listed dose 2 ml per 100 wt. we give 3ml per 100 wt.) Our vet also strongly discourages Safeguard, says that she has had way to many problems with it.

For years my wife's dad has been growing a small bit of tobbaco that he rolls up and gives the goats to eat. Been working a lot of years for him and I have had good luck with it also.

I am not a vet and not making any recommendations but will share my experiences.
I use the 1% Ivomec on our goats. It works very well. I do my own fecal testing and find very few worms or eggs on slides if I find any at all. We try to worm based on fecal testing not giving wormer to an animal that doesn’t need it, but many people just set a schedule and go from there and have great results. I have tried it both orally and injected. I prefer injected (SQ) as you only use as you stated 1cc per 75 lbs. Talking to a vet I was told that if you use it orally (PO) you need to give 2 times that to get a good kill because a goats metabolism is so high. Also when you inject it, it stays in their system longer and will also help with lice and other external parasites as well as internal. When I gave it PO the goats acted off for a couple of days like it made them a little sick.
Ivomec does sting like crazy when injected and some goats will react like they think you are killing them so be ready for a reaction if you inject it. I also keep epinephrine on hand just in case one acts shocky afterwards but have never had to use it. When I do want to use an oral wormer I use Valbazen (sp?). Ivomec or any other wormer will not take care of Coccida though. For that I use Sulfadimethoxine 40% but I do give it orally.

It would be a good idea to talk to a local vet to find out what is working in your area. In some areas of the country some wormers are ineffective. When giving wormers be sure to not under dose. Under dosing can make for resistant worms making the wormer ineffective and then you have to go looking for another one to use. Some wormers you need to be right on the money with dosage as under or over dosing is a problem. Ivomec I am told is very safe even if over dosed (to a limit). Some are not so be careful.

I have two good vet books I keep on hand. One is Goat Medicine by Smith and Sherman and Veterinary Parasitology. These two books will help stay on top of most things.

Happy Goating,

Greg

Wow...great info! Thanks Greg and Rich and the rest of you for posting back. Rich, I contacted Sally but she does not use the injectables so declined (nicely) to give an opinion. Hey Greg, I went and checked my Ivermec injectable and it is
the "plus" version with 10% clorsulon added. Any chance you know what this is and if it is safe for the goats? Darn things can be a little touchy and I would hate to have one fall over dead in front of the kids. I am good with doing it subcutaneously and understand the benefits.
Thanks again.

Yes you can use the Ivomec Plus. The added benefit with it is it will take care of liver flukes as well where the regular Ivomec will not. Follow the bottle and you should be just fine.

I use a generic Ultramectin, It has Ivomec in parnthasis, I give 1 cc / hundred pounds. I have never given it orally. Is there a reason that you don't want to give it Sub Q? We have had good success with this program. The link thak Old gave you is good. I respect Sally and she has been helpful. My only word of caution is there are two camps of goat people, Those who treat goats like pets and livestock people. I'm a livestock person and my approach differs from Sally's. But she is a good resource.

nwb, there is no reason not to go sub Q with this product in my opinion. It works better given sub Q.

Funny you mention the two different camps of goat people. They are as you said different camps. I happen to be in both of them. I have some that are pets and treated as such but I also have a commercial dairy herd of 100 milkers and they are treated a little different, as they need to support the dairy.
