How to seed new pasture?

I am new to this farming thing and trying to get a new pasture seeded for livestock. Here in Oklahoma everyone seems to use bermuda. I have tractor supply's horse pasture/orchard grass. It calls for a 25lb bag to cover 1 acre. I'm not sure how thick to put it down to make it cover the acre? What needs to be done to ensure good growth? And how to water 3-5 acres of new seeded pasture with something other than what seems like a miles worth of gardening hoses.

Well I went to Lowes tonight and bought the sprinkler heads that covered the most square footage. Max I could find was 5600 sq/ft. I found that if zip tie the sprinkler head to a T post at about 4-5 ft above ground level and place them 50ft apart they will reach each other with a nice overlap. So, lots of 50ft hoses, sprinkler heads, and hand full of hose splitters and I things are now getting wet. Only down side is now that that works I have to buy more for the other pasture.

If you can get it disced, and the larger sticks picked up,borrow/rent a spin type spreader, put down 1/2 of the seed in one direction, and them go perpendicular to that and spin on the other 1/2.This should give you a fairly even coverage.Follow up by dragging an old section of chainlink fence over it all. This will give the seed good soil contact and not drag up alot of sticks and level it out somewhat.Another option would be a cultipacker seeder if one is available to rent in your area.

One thought for the sticks etc would be to rent a landscape rake or york rake. Not big but you could winrow or even pull to end of field to dump depending on amount. 3 or 4 acres should go a lot faster. pull a trailer or pickup to throw the piles/windrows into and haul off. Good luck

You should go to your county agriculture dept for their advise as we dont live there and you are dry and probably should have been seeded earlier.

Buckrock, can't help you any with your questions because we're just getting ready to seed 1.5 acres ourselves. Just had the field destumped and looking for ideas. I'll be watching the responses you get closely!

What I have learned so: After having a bull dozer come thru and clear all put a few shade trees what was left was a field full of everything from twigs to tree limbs. If you disc it the little stuff will get broken up and turned under. Then I raked the field out. That smoothed it over, but it was still loose. What was left was a fraction of the original amount of sticks that needed to be picked up. That is what I've done so far.

The bulldozer and trackhoe just finished up last friday. I'm still looking at what it takes to clean all the roots and sticks up. I'm TOTALLY new to this sort of thing. The neighbor said he had something I could borrow to drag around behind my Ford 2N. I'm checking on that tomorrow. We want to get the seed down sometime yet this month. This is supposed to be the right time of year to seed a pasture.

I've been picking up some sticks, etc but I keep hoping for an easier way!

Same here. After the dozer work I would have been doing good if a guy could make money harvesting sticks. Run a disc thru it if you can. My 9N was pulling a 5ft disc without much problems. Only problem is I couldn't go to deep. Deeper would cut more. But it worked great on chopping and turning under the little to medium stuff. I had front axle wear rub hole in radiator. Had to go rent a tractor to get things done this weekend. Hated to do it, but even for a green tractor it did good.

for grass you don't need to go deep after all you just need the seed in contact with soil , and belive it or not running a roller over it after seeding will produce a better stand and don't forget lime and fertlizer . and hope you get needed rain .

A disc is something I don't have. At least not at the moment. I'll check around and see if anyone has one. I read on one of the other forums about someone using a tractor to pull an i-beam around to help smooth the ground. I do have a large chunk of i-beam that I might try. But I still need to drag some kind of harrow around to get the roots and such out.

I'm just a city boy trying to learn how to manage a real small acreage!

The best time to seed a pasture is before the spring rains come ( if they come ). As you said this time of year you may have to water to make sure the seeds get enough moisture to grown properly.

There is an implement called a york rake that looks like a back blade but has kind of spring teeth that would be good for raking roots and sticks out of the pasture. After you do that, you can put the seed on ( you need to find out the density per square foot to put it down so you can adjust your seeder properly, one thing I heard is spread it over a small area and then walk it, you should see a couple seeds per heel print that you leave ).

You can use the york rake again to stir the seeds in a bit or a drag harrow to do the same thing.

As far as watering, I don't have any suggestions except wait for fall or spring to seed. If you are getting pretty regular rains you may be all right to try doing it now.
