Almost forgot, are you killing the "goofy weed" too? When we went to Pioneer village last week we visited a friend's farm near Holdrege. We found out Nebraska's fence rows are full of marijuana. Maybe a new cash crop if hay doesn't do so good this year!hehe

Do you still use rod weaders? I used to love doing that when I was a teenager.

All the neighbors do; they use it as the last pass before the drill.

I don't have one yet; I'll probably just follow the packer this year. But 'spose I'll have to round one up someday.

It serves it's purpose.

There are no "people" here either. I can go for weeks on end without ever seeing another human. :>)

Yeah, I know.

I had already worked it down 'bout two weeks ago with the vibrashank.

Just made a round across the headland this morning where the field cultivator missed some low spots. :>)

You know if you are seriously going to make a pass with a tillage impliment over that field for that few weeds then your fuel is still to darn cheap. OR it could be that USDA looks after its farmers a lot better than CDA. What even a whiff of roundup (like .33 litres(US quart) wouldn't do to those sunflowers using about 1/10 the fuel, and not drying out what looks like dry land, already. that tractor will pull 110 feet of sprayer at 2/3 throttle.

Allan, in the northern part of NY. where my hobby farm is, it was 46 about 3 mornings last week with a cold rain. It started to warm up yesterday, just cold and nasty. But yes the weeds are doing well.

It is so dry out here that we can only crop every other year. Just isn't enough moisture.

So, this ground will be planted to hard red winter wheat in September and harvested next summer. In the meantime, we keep the weeds down by summer-fallowing when necessary.

Allan;

I think you are going about your dryland farming business the right way. The weeds need to be kept down and you are going about it the right way. You are only drying the top few inches of soil and you have to work it to keep it from blowing. Worked for a fellow one sumer and if I wasnt cutting hay or cultivating corn I was working summer fallow ground. First with a one way,next time over was with a straight disk and then a harrow. And that was the fun part.
