Was returning a borrowed cattle chute this morning. Had checked the air in truck tires, and aired this one uo to 40#, as it had been doing a little very slow leak. Was a practically new tire with probably less than a couple thousand miles. Drove about 5 miles to friend's houseat moderate speed, backed up to the garage, stopped, and we were in back unloading when BANG. Whole truck bounced like bomb went off. Tire had blown out - whole sidewall separated from bead, and had two splits clear from bead to edge of tread. Opened a hole in the side of the tire 8" wide and 6" deep. Thank goodness the truck was parked, could have been catastrophic at highway speeds. We use the truck only ocassionally, and rest of time it sits in the garage, probably less than 3000 miles a year. Anyway, the moral of the story - KEEP WATCH OF YOUR TIRES, they can fail you very unexpectedly!

Back in the early 60's I wasing airing a tire with my knee's on the tire and it blew out. You think getting hit with a ball hurts try getting hit with the air leaving a tire that ruptured, now that hurts. Stan

Since you had road hazard maybe you should have had the tire checked before it blew. A slow leaking tire tells you there is something wrong like maybe a small hole in the side wall.

Dayton Quadra LTE 235/70 15. I've run dozens of Daytons over the years, had very good luck with them. Had paid the extra $7.00 for "road hazard guarantee" so looks like dealer owes me a tire!

'bout a month ago, I'm headed home from errands on the two lane highway I live on (U.S. Route 6).

I hear a strange noises -- dull, loud thud then lots of little, "scraping" thuds is best I can describe it...

Then my car starts getting sprayed with debris!

Truck headed in the other direction blew it's rear, driver side tire just as we passed each other!

That stuff can and will happen, your very lucky you were stopped and not running down the road like I was in February. I have an F350 long bed 4 door and even as long and heavy as it is when this left rear tire blew at about 65mph I thought I was going to loose truck, trailer and all. Fortunatly I didn"t panic and just let out of it and coasted to a stop, then changed my drawers and after that the tire. The bottom picture is the tire that blew, I was kind and put threw it on the trailer rather than leaving it on the roadside like so many do. third party image. third party image. third party image

A suggestion re' the tire: consider making a report to NHTSA (Nat'l Hiway Trfc Sfty Admin); it sure sounds like a factory defect, and if so, it's probably not the only one...while NHTSA isn't really a consumer-oriented outfit, the buildup of complaints sometimes forces them to issue advisories, or act, and such reports could provide support for someone's tire who blew, causing injuries, and was later told by the tire co "ooh, ooh, that's never happened before..." like the Firestones a few years ago...reports should be filed on any safety-related part that appears to malfunction or fail when it shouldn't...
