Hi Guys,

In for dinner. Started the second go-'round at the summer fallow today. Should have been out there last week when all the neighbors were going, I guess.

Finding sunflowers the size of small import cars. :>)

Nice part is that there is now plenty of ground moisture and that tough old sod finally gave up the ghost and is mellowing down pretty darned nice.

Allen, by my standards that"s pretty level ground...not a gear shift hill in sight. What do you use to block wheels with...or do you even have to? Not a rock in sight! I sometimes kid my Ohio friends over the state line from me about this. I can"t imagine what it would be like having a farm where you can see the home buildings no matter where you are on the place. Here in Hillsdale County, Michigan, we got everything for land, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Most of the bigger farmers have gone to no-till "chemical farming" here.

Hi Guy,

When I was a little boy, I can remember my mom hanging a sheet out on the clothes line so that my dad, who was cultivating at the far corner of the place, knew when it was dinner time. :>)

I've gotta get my wife to the eye doctor too. The other day she was wondering if we should run out to the pasture (1/2 mile away) to check on the pumpjack and make sure it was running so the cattle had plenty of water.

I told her it was fine as I could see it pumping. She said she couldn't even see the well, let alone the water coming out of the pipe. :>)

Hi Kelly,

It is so dry out here that on average, there is only enough moisture to raise a crop every other year.

So, we let the ground "rest" and gather strenth for one summer planting hard red winter wheat in the fall.

Also, it helps with the fertilizer issue by leting the ground lie dormant the better part of one year.

Trouble is, the weeds keep growing anyways, so they have to be controlled thruout the "layby" time.

OK- in my growing up years I heard about fallow ground, planting every other year- occasional tillage but not too much because of the loss of soil moisture----- ----- but by your picture, I don't see heavy weed pressure (which consumes an inordinante amount of moisture)- so why the tillage already? ok- just because of the fun of tractor time! Also- do some let things grow for a half or full season, and knock it down with herbicides, instead of the fuel and time issues with timely tillage?

JM,

The pictures just don't do it justice. The field is literally green with weeds, most of ‘em small.

After a rain, if we don't till the ground, it can blow, so the working of the ground actually serves two purposes.

Yes, there are those (not many around here, tho) that use the herbicides and just let the ground stay in last year’s wheat stubble until planting time the following fall.

Trash farming has always struck me the same way as same-sex unions and inter-racial marriages. Might be in vogue, fashionable and the “in thing” to do nowadays.

I just don't like it and it's not for me, thanks. I’ll put ‘er back into buffalo grass first. :>)

FANTASTIC ANALOGY!!!!! !!!!!LOL. Reminds me of a prof I had in college- regarding inter-racial dating and marriage. Told him I'm not prejudiced because I don't choose those options- I don't have to marry one to know (or prove to others) that I appreciate all of God's glorious creations. Told the draft-dodger that I learned in my military time, what I learned growing up, that we all bleed the same color under whatever skin our God covered us with. Saw if firsthand that guts, valor, patriotism comes from within- the heart, not the skin. ok- step away from the soapbox!

Taking a break here, rain, really a just sprinkles. Trying to save money and rebuild the tucker fingers. $56.00 each and they are shot, so welding, grinding/fitting. Allan, is that an optical illusion or is there a slight roll to the land? lol Bob

Oh,

This chunk of ground is a damned mountain range to me.

I kinda miss farming the irrigated place, but it's rented out fer the time being.

What's a guy to do? Up and down, up and down all day long. :>)
