Hi Gang;
Main crop potatoes are up and doing well, this variety has light purle coloured flowers. Note the irrigation reel in left rear background,
Cheers David

I can't grow Maris Piper so I use Pentland Dell. It comes out lovely and brown from the chip fat. I only have a small potato plot, about 2 acres this year but I like to grow a wide variety. Rocket and Foremost for early (May to July) Nicola and Mafona for early bakers, Merlin and Valor for maincrop with a few Romano (large red).

The best one I have grown over the past few years is one called Ambo. Its a Cara/Desiree cros and grows huge in the right conditions. I had some weighing 5 lbs each the year before last. But there was a seed failure this year and could not get any.

My work in agricultural electronics is mainly with potato planters, sprayers and harvesters here in England. So I see large crops from planting to harvest in the field as I go all over the country problem solving on the equipment.

Do you know which are the best varieties to plant for a) baking and b) chipping. I too plant a garden and I usually plant at least two varieties; Chieftan Red and Superior white, although I'm interested in the English varieties also. Since I do an organic approach, I end up picking off all the potatoe beetels by hand (What a job!!). Hence I only plant about half an acre. But I sure do love using the old tractor to do the tilling and hilling.
Thanks

The best known chipping potato here is Maris Piper.The sad thing is, a lot of the newer varieties have sacrificed flavour at the expense of yield. My uncle grows a very high yielding Hungarian variety called "Sarpo Mira". They make nice chips ( French fries if you like! )are nice for roasting,mashing etc, but the real beauty about them is they are resistant to potato blight. Slugs don't seem to care for them either. They would make the ideal potato for the organic grower.

Nice picture. I raise a small, garden sized patch of Yukon Golds. We have already been eating a few of them, and the plants are now drying up. Just a couple more weeks and I can probably dig all of them.

Looks great. Fortunately many fields over here look similarly promising. Any lice yet?
