I have read on here before about how people feel when the rare word is used. When I saw this one I just had to bring attention to it. In the for sale ads it reads, fairly rare John Deere 70. Ok I"ve had my laugh now someone tell me what that means.

We used to have a JD 70 on factory LP, been told it was somewhat rare. I guess not too many were shipped out of the factory on LP.

I don"t know if I"d call that tractor rare. But it is somewhat uncommon. Here in corn country anyway. A 1956 model 70 with manual steering and no live PTO is just not seen here. When farmers around here hung 4 and 6 row front mounted cultivators on these tractors, the first option they wanted was power steering. And these same tractors had very heavy 2 row mounted cornpickers installed in the fall. Then, the last thing they wanted was a tractor with no live PTO and no power steering! A corn picker used with a transmission driven PTO is a real pain to operate. These tractors were owned by the farmer in this area and operated by him and his kids. I think the stripped down models were a little more common down South were a lot of tractors were operated by hired labor (cotton plantations etc). In fact, I have never seen a 70 without live PTO.

A little pink on the inside makes it fairly rare. But I prefer mine medium, with a hint of pink and just an oozing of blood. Mmmmmm mmmm

A low production number will make a tractor rare. Like if its a 70 standard LP gas, only 336 were made, or a 70 high crop gasoline, only 16 were made. On some tractors PTO is a rare thing for them to have. Most standard tractors didnt have PTO so if one does have PTO this is called rare.

There seems to be a perception by some that PTO is rare on standard tractors. This is quite false when we are talking 40's and 50's tractors. It is in fact rare that a tractor of this vintage would not have a PTO. (I grew up and continue to live in an area where by far the predominant tractor was the standard tread tractor.) In grain country where the standard tractor was king, PTO was required to run swathers, combines, mowers, rock pickers in some areas, ensilage cutters and blowers, grain augers, hammer mills, etc.. In the 60's and 70's as tractors started getting into 100+HP PTO did become a less common option as smaller tractors continued to fill the PTO requirement and the large tractors were used mostly for tillage work.

About like the rare WD6 advertised. The only thing rare was his asking price.

Rare the only way a JD 70 would be rare is if it was painted red from the factory and I don't think any of them where. Ya not as common as the A or B but by not means rare. Some people don't have a clue when it comes to posting ads or think saying rare will help them sell.

What makes it rare is that is is pinkish in color. That is caused by someone who has painted it red and the sun has faded it. When someone says it's RARE , I don't even look at the ad.
