LP Tractor Refilling

Spoke with a LP distributor that would set-up a liquid or wet line apparatus in our area.

In one of the replies to another question"s posting, there was brief mention of using a portable tank (vapor line only) that was turned upside down to enable refilling of liquid to the tractor.

Does this inverting method work? Does anyone know details about how to do this? Is there adequate LP to run the tractor for any length of time?

We have a 100 pound tank which might be able to be inverted for this purpose, assuming this is a valid method.

Once agian, thank you for the great advice.

work part time for years for a propane dealer. inverting a tank of any size to fill another tank of any size will NEVER fill the tank. once the pressure{ which keeps the propane in liquid state} equalizes on both tanks, regardless of the tank size the flow of liquid lp will stop! you can get a percentage into the empty, but never will you fill it.

Yes that will work but check the price on the refilling the 100# tank per gallon compared to gas delivered in the truck.

Just need a hose to go from the P.O.L. fitting on the cylinder to the 1.5" ACME on the tractor. This won't work with the 20# cylinders with the newer OPD fitting as they have a anti tip valve and won't let liquid come out.

As I mentioned before you can set this up on a tank with a dip tube also and save some cash.

Either one of these setups will require you to vent the tractor tank which is ok but you better know what you are doing.

I forgot to mention one other way to check your tank for liquid with draw if there is more than one valve is to crack each one. If you get a white cloud that is your liquid withdraw. And yes some tanks don't have this.

Hope my post didn't get to long this time.

With a portable tank smaller than your tractor tank you really aren't going to do any refilling but maybe get in enough for a short run. It takes pressure of a larger volume tank to refill your tractor tank to the 70-80%. You would still only get a partial refill. JD LP tractors and some others had a tee fitting with a cap on it you could remove to direct attach a portable tank to the line going to regulator for purposes of just getting tractor the larger tank to refill. You just tied on a small tank like a BBQ tank to tractor while doing that. We never did that because we always had LP tanks on trailers to refill in the fields. It is illegal now to pull those on public roadways.

Yes that will work. Will take a while to fill the tractor and you will have to have the bleeder valve on on the tractor tank. A 100 lb cylinder will have roughly 21 gallon of liquid LP in it. I have done it with a 33 lb tank that was tipped up side down.
