327 manifold

Will a 327 chevy intake manifold interchange with a 400 chevy manifold? Someone stole my carb on my 400 and I was wondering if I could just take the manifold and carb off of a junk 327 that I have and put them on my 400.

I think the 327 intake would fit, but the oil tube at the front might get in the way of something. Also, depending on how old the 327 was, it might not have a nipple for the PCV a 400 needs.

Wouldn't it be easier to just put the carb off the 327 on the 400 manifold that is already on the engine and hopefully is not leaking? It is a fairly big job to change the intake on a Chevy small block, but not too bad to change a carb.

All of the stock 400 small blocks I have seen used a 2 barrel carb. I wouldn't be surprised if the 327 carb was smaller than the 400 carb, and if so, would cost some horsepower, especially at higher engine speeds. Or maybe a similar carb to the original 400 carb could be found as a rebuild and that would be sure to work.

If the 400 has a 4 barrel intake on it, there are numerous carbs that will work. I like AFB's, but if the manifold is a spread bore, a Quadrajet is also a good, inexpensive carb. Good luck!

Four barrel Roch vacuum secondary has smaller primaries than the two barrel Roch. As for difference in mileage? Litle to none. Proper jetting,springs & metering rods will make more difference than 2 or 4 barrel. A Roch two barrel v.s. a Holley 750 double pumper? All together a different situation all together.

In addition to what J said ...If you go with the 2-barrell the only difference you will notice is at full throttle . Just put a larger 2-barrell on it . The throttle response will be a little better in my opinion with a 4-barrell because the primaries will be a little smaller . It all depends on what it's going in . ...Randy

Your answer is Yes and No. It is true that the manifold will bolt up the the engine and work. The 400 is a newer engine and there are different ways of attaching external components. For example, the 327 engine had an ignition coil mounted with a bracket to the intake manifold. The later 400 came with the larger HEI ignition that had the coil internal to the distributor. That shouldn't be a problem. Next, alternator mounting. All but the very latest 327 engines used the short water pump and 400's I believe used the long water pump. That doesn't directly affect the intake manifold but you may need to use the alternator mounts from the 327 depending what the application of the 327 was. Chevrolet used that engine in cars, pickups and 2 ton trucks so there were a lot of varibles. If I recall properly, all 400 engines had the oil fill plug in the valve cover. 327 had that oil fill tube in the intake next to the thermostat housing. That may be where you run into problems again with alternator mounting brackets. Same my be true for A/C if you have it. Like my college buddy, now Automotive Proffesor says, "We can fix it no matter what it costs." LOL The best advice for you is to clean up the 327 manifold and set it on the 400. Take a look at all the brackets and mounting locations and then decide from there. If you look at the hotrod aftermarket, they make aluminium intakes for small block Chevys from 283 to 400. One part number covers them all. You can make it work. Just be ready to use some of the old brackets, studs and bolts and some patience to figure it out.

Every 400 I have seen all had four barrel carbs up to and including one ton trucks. Going from a 4 barrel to a 2 barrel will cost you about 50 horsepower according the Chevy's numbers. But then, anything prior to 74 had more compression on the four barrel model and different cam I say if you have it and it works, use it. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Yes! Most of the components from small block chevys will interchange. Anything from a 283 up to a 400. If you want to make a killer small block, take a 350 block, put a 400 crank in it, 2.02 camel hump heads, and a moderate street cam. By the way, for a street motor, stock exhaust manifolds and 2 1/2" dual exhaust WITH a cross over, is your best setup.

Yes, it will as mentioned. For some odd reason the 307 is the wierd one, not sure if it will fit. Opened one up, was told it was a 283, it wasn't, took a 307 block, bored it 0.125(one eighth of an inch) put in a 327 crank with a good cam and hump heads, it was a Screamer!

What kind of horsepower differences will there be with my setup? The carb is a 2 barrel rochester. I do believe that a 400 had a 4 barrel carb stock, right?
