I am thinking about buying a combine to harvest some soybeans and corn. I don't need anything huge and outrageously priced. I have talked to a couple of people and I have heard about John Deere 4400 and 6600. What are your thoughts or do you have other ideas?

Thanks,
Tod in Ohio

Before buying any combines check dealers in your area, my part of Ohio for repaires is Deere first then IHC and New Holland with Gleaner in there someware around the IHC - NH and Massey since the 300-410-510 have only seen a couple of the newer ones. Make sure of parts and repair avaibility. Some areas one will be good while in other areas that one will be unheard of.

I'm with tractor vet go massey. The price of deere corn &grain heads are way out of line. I'd go diesel. Our 750 massey will do about 2 times as much work as our old 410 gasser on 1/2 the fuel.

Unless you're a mechanic and got lots of guaranteed acres to harvest every season and even then for less downtime and to get it done it could be just better to hire it harvested. Old machines take lots of maintainence, parts, repairs, less fuel efficient engines, all = $$$$ out of your harvest also. Those were good machines in their day but look how old they are now. For here on dryland crops where you don't know if and when you will make a crop it's not economically feasible to own a combine any longer.

As for myself i prefer the Massey line of the smaller combines as i have seen alot of problems with the older deeres and if you do not know what to look for you could end up with a combine that is worthe nothing more then a demo durby pice . When looking at and older combine you litteraly have goover every inch of the machine from top to bottom inside and out . I have bought a bunch of older machine that after a littel work some new bearing and a few belts have given good service for years . I never minded a gasser but now with the gas prices getting way out of hand and burnen over 40 gallon a day it is realy starten to get into the bank account as i can't carry enough in the pocket anymore to fill the pick up let lone the combine . with these old gasser combines they like the GOOD gas and run cooler on the high test stuff and that get to be over a 120 bucks a day for fuel . a nice older 550 massey is one heck of a good combine if ya can find one and one with a good hydo and electric header control would be real nice . But this is just me i just find that i feel they are easier to work on and do a far better job with a lot more modren stuff for the age .
