No need to start a row!

It was recommneded to me by a friend who uses it in everything he has. He said, it lowered the temp of his Peterbilt's rears by 25 degrees...yeah I asked how do you know, and his answer was he inserted a thermometer down in the housing.

Now as for STP.....I have an old friend who told me his first encounter with STP was in the 1950's when he was in the Air Force. Seems the AF used it in jet engines and bought it by the drum. These guys started using it in their cars too! When it hit the market after his AF days, he has never been without it. Now, whether any of this stuff is a magic bullet or not....I don't know. All my vehicles are well over 100K and none have ever used any additives to get there. I have gotten lazy and switched to synthetic oils and just change mine once a year.

The reason I decided to use the Lucas is because my last JD had mainbearing wear at 1500 hours and it was religiously cared for. It wore enough that it lost sufficient oil pressure below 1500 rpms. This new JD took a serious bite in my wallet and I figure I have nothing to lose by adding the Lucas.

If JD recommended Lucas and you didn't use it then that might be why the main bearing wear.Since I am pretty sure they don't have a recommendation for it,I would say it had a problem of another sort.Since it is allmost impossible that your new one will have the same problem, you will use Lucas in it and won't have the wear. I say use it if you are convinced. It don't cost THAT much. Mr. Lucas IS a very smart man after all.

I keep hearing "use it and love it", "works good for me", "made a big difference in mine" etc, etc, etc. Please tell us "doubting Thomas'" exactly what it has done that is so great and what Mr. Lucas knows that is a secret to all the multimillion $$ oil companies. Mr. Lucas is good at making $$$$ because of his excellent "MARKETING SKILLS",and NOT because of a magic potion that we all need and no one else seems to be able to make. STP and others were and are, just a bandaid for old low tech oils that were pushed to their limit or abused to their limit by lack of maintenance. If a 5# increase in oil pressure is all it takes to sell you on a product ,then buy it.If a superior LUBRICANT is what you want, they are out there, you don't need this or any other additive to "help them out".

Like Buzzman said, the PS stuff is great, too. The best thing to do is go get some for yourself and try it out! I tend to not put much stock into what some engineer in a lab coat has figured out that I SHOULD do (most of them ain't worth the price of the paper thier diploma is written on). If I use it and don't like it, then I don't buy no more. If I LIKE it, guess what.

Forrest Lucas recently opened a plant near here, he paid $20 million for the naming rights to the Indianapolis Colts' new stadium, and he just bought the local railroad...so if his additives are responsible for all that, I'll not say anything against his products.

His power steering additive quieted my daughter's car...so I'm satisfied with that one. Never used any of the others.

The reason for using the PS additive was because, even with the "correct" major-brand lubricant, the PS pump was noisy...even after installing a new pump.

With Lucas additive, PS pump was quieter...while I didn't use a db meter to quantify the result, it DID quiet a noisy pump...which is what it was recommended to do. So it works, in my book. I wasn't a believer before, but I am now.

I'm not a believer in ANYONE's oil additives. I figure if a quality oil won't solve your problems, no "mechanic-in-a-can" is gonna fix it.

Many oil additives are nothing more than viscosity improvers. They help keep the oil thick or viscous so that they don't thin out quite so fast, particularly true when using multi-vis oil instead of straight grades. But the multi-vis oils have improved a lot in recent years and thinning is not the problem it once was, it stays in grade a long-long time, so consumption should not be a problem because of poor quality oil. As for me, I would rather use a heavier vis oil if consumption is a problem, rather than mess up the chemistry the oil company put in their product. For example, Mobil Delvac or Chevron Delo oil has millions of dollars of chemistry dollars spent on them to offer a good product for our use, why should I do my own witches brew of additive to "improve" what is allready there? Lucas is going to be at odds to some degree with what Shell or Mobil or Chevron or whomever put in their oil. As to Gear oils, you felows may want to look into Chevron Delo Gear, it is truly an outstanding product that needs no Lucas or anything else to prop it up. Delo Gear has much more oil film strength than conventional blended oil does, yet is not a synthetic and will mix with any oil allready in the gear box. It's the only non synthetic approved by Eaton Corporation for extended warranty use. Excellent product, no need for Lucas.

Many people swear by the Lucas additives... I'm not much on them though. Check out Link for a test with pics on the Lucas gear oil additive.

What does it do that makes everybody so positive about it? Most of these additives do little or nothing for an engine in good condition. I've never noticed much difference with any additive, and I'm not sure the statistical data is there to say any one in particular extends engine life - too may other variables.
