There has been some discussion lately about biodiesel. Been wondering? Why not used motor oil instead of chicken grease, etc. There seems to be lots of it, hard to get rid of. Why wouldn't it work if filtered, mixed with diesel?

Here, kick this around a little. I once went with a friend who had just gotten a boat...we put it in the water and run a few hundred yards and it quit...and wouldn"t restart. Finally, I started looking the situation over and questioning him and when it came to the oil he got for the tank...he said just oil. I took the lid off of the gas tank and peeked inside. Now the oil he used was just engine oil...like 10w30 or the like and it didn"t mix at all...it was just like strands laying in there. So, this brings up this question: Would it do the same thing in diesel? If it wouldn"t mix with gas, maybe it won"t mix well with diesel either. Fred OH

About 20 years ago, A truck shop I worked in started using a "blender" to filter the used oil and blend it with the fuel in the fuel tank. It worked great till we started getting the 60 series Detroit engines. Detroit stated that we couldn't do that with those engines. Thus that program went away. We did gain about 10 gallons of fuel that way every oil change however. Tim in OR

Hi lgc,

My son worked as a diesel mechanic for a sod farm that had 400 pieces of diesel engine eqpt. There normal pratice was to dump the used oil into the fuel tank. In the six years he was there he stated he didn't see any signs of problems releated to this procedure.

I would think if it wasn't thinned for winter use it would be a problem during the winter time. Other than gaining some extra power because of the higher BTU content, it appears not to be a problem.

Cummins has a automatic oil syphion system that's available on there OTR engines. They carry a small make up oil tank to replace what gets drawn from the oil pan and burned as fuel. If I remember correct, they get 100k mile oil changes from dino oil using this system. They only change the oil filter every 25k miles.

I've been using my waste oil for years in all my diesels with no problems. I have twin 300 gallon tanks and my pump has its own filter. Only down side is - the fuel turns black pretty fast. I had a new load of clean diesel - over 500 gallons - and it got a black color from just dumping three gallons of waste oil into it. In regard to the worries about particles in waste oil ?? Maybe, but I've no problems. The waste oil has been filtered in the engine it came out of. It then runs through my pump filters, and then - again -runs through whatever filters the tractor or truck has where it's being used. Seems three stages of filtering ought to do the trick.

Best use for used motor oil is in my waste oil furnace in my shop. Keeps the shop warm all winter so I can work on my tractors in the warm.

LGC----- -Used motor oils contain a lot of metals. First there are the additives that are put in them for pefromance;zinc, phosporous, sulfur, etc.

Secondly there are the wear metals that come from the engine parts; aluminum, cpooer, iron, etc.

The used lubes would be extermely distructive to valves and pistons.

Some municipalities used to run used motor oil in their city busses. Remember the stinky, smoky old busses? Suspect the oil could be mixed with enough diesel, to thin it down, and run in diesels, but it typically is dirty, and won't burn clean. Could produce problems in engine with continued use.
