After taking both tractors to shows this year 3 times now I have had items put in the fuel tank (ranging from towels, gum wrappers, gum) etc in the fuel tank. I have never had any problems in the past. Its almost enough to make me stop going (that and fuel prices). I know people enjoy looking at tractors remenicing and its just a few **s holes that cant keep thier hands to themselves and respect other peoples property. The 2 tractors I have that are "show worthy" are a John deere 4840 and a Farmall H (was grandpas tractor not an ih man). Does anyone know where i could get some sort of locking fuel cap or any tips? Trying to get apper towels out of a fuel tank (were papertowels or toilet paper out of porta potty ) was an experience. I googled locking tractor fuel caps etc and got nothing. Thanks

I know this won't keep everything out but maybe take some screen material and make a strainer to fit into the neck so at least stuff is easily fished out.

You would need to drill one out unless you can find one that is totally vented (no pressure/no vacuum). With a diesel engine, pressure can blow the seals in an injector pump. With a gas tractor, pressure can blow any one of several things (line, hose, tank, fitting, sediment bowl) and spray gas on a hot engine or where there are sparks (distributor, for example). Vacuum causes stalling, of course.

On some tractor the locking gas cap that are used on cars/trucks wil fit and lock. I have a WD Allis that has one, it doesn't look all that good but it does work

Thanks for the suggestion, however, the 4840 "gas cap" is huge, doubt one from a car would fit that. The H is smaller about the size of a cars gas cap however how would I ever know which one would fit the H there are tons of stant lockable gas cap models.

Take the cap to the auto parts store and compare them. Or take it to wal-mart one form say a 1970s car or made for a 1970s car should work on the H. As far as the JD try a truck stop some trucks use a large cap and they sell locking caps for trucks also
