The boy took to the fair, as one of his projects, a bale of grass hay. I happen to be walking through the barn as they where jugding the hay. Got first place in class, second place grand champ (all hay). Not bad for a first timer (hay). Dairy feeders are tomorrow. He place last year (5th), but its not looking good for this year. That steer doesn't like being around people. Did good at home but has been skidish and difficult at the fair.

Sometimes, those Steers will surprise you.. Years ago, I had a Chianina steer I fed for the show.. 9 months old, 980 pounds. When we got him to the show barn, he went crazy!! I almost backed out of showing him, figuring he was going to drag me all over the ring. But once the show started, He acted like a king, seemed he knew he was being judged. He placed 2nd...

Did that prize-winning hay come out of your 50 year old red Ford baler?

Yes it did.

And so did the other 699. Wasn't expecting so much. We had everything with wheels under it full and hay left on the ground. Clover is growing like crazy in this hot humid weather. Never missed a knot. Only problem I have is after about 300 bales the chamber gets shined up good and I have to really feed it to keep the bales tight.

That's great to hear your boy got first place. My two daughters were in 4-H and raised, and showed chickens, pigs, dairy, and beef cattle. My one daughter won grand champion beef one year. Stan

congratulations! It is great to see kids interested in 4-h type activities as there is so much other stuff vying for their time. My three year old helped me unload two old disabled jd tractors from my flatbed yesterday in the Carolina heat and humidity and loved every minute of it. I hope I can keep him interested like your kids!
