Hey All, Posted this question on the garden tractor forum but got no response. We have a 445 JD mower with a cracked hood. New hood from Deere is over $300. I was wondering if there is a source out there that would have a used or even aftermarket hood. Thanks in advance for any help

My suggestion to you and anyone else who has questions on JD lawn tractors would be to visit Weekend Freedom Machines. That is the authority site on JD Lawn and Garden tractors. It also has a for sale and wanted section.

Used hoods that are not smashed or have been already repaired are rare and cost just about as much as a new hood. I've seen front bumpers added to more than a few lawn & garden tractors, usually after smashing the 2nd or 3rd hood.

There is one in Luther, Iowa behind an independent mower repair shop. Something as new as the 445 isn't likely.

And the odds are that if your hood is cracked all the rest in the world are unless you had something odd like a tree falling on it.

Ya, this was an accident. I had the haybine parked in the corner of the yard. Dad was mowing and nosed in alittle too close and snap, a peice busted off the hood (fiberglass). It`s one of those cosmetic things, mowers in otherwise great shape. It just bugs dad to see that chunk missing. On the other hand it`s hard to shell out $300 + bucks to replace it. I don`t know much about fiberglass, but we have the broken piece. Can it be repaired??

Fiberglass can be repaired. Its based on a resin, either epoxy or polyester and glass fibers put into a mold, often only a one sided mold. The same resin can put it back together and fill the gaps where it ripped and then a bit of sanding, filling and paint can fix it almost like new.

Yep, like Gerald said, easy repair job. If you're not sure doing it yourself, take the hood to local body repair shop. They have the tools, materials, epoxy, & paint to do a professional job. You shouldn't even be able to tell where the piece was chipped off the hood when it's done. Lot cheaper then spending $300 for a new hood.

jdpuller or some thing like that I think. In Iowa. Been a while since I bought from him and I might have him mixed up with a regular here.
