OT - clear/replace fence

Several questions

1. Along the road, my wire fence is not in good shape -- overgrown with privet and kudzu. I am considering removing the fence and replacing with a wooden fence. Any suggestions as to how to tackle the project? Any estimates on cost? The road is about one half mile. If the cost is too much, I may use barbed wire for a portion and wooden fence for the balance.

2. There is a fairly steep ditch between the road and the fence. Currently, the ditch is a magnet for weeds. Is there a way to maintain the ditch outside of spraying regularly with Roundup?

What ever you chose make sure it has tracks ,tires are not cheap and a stray post always ends up in a tire that means $$$$$$$$$$$

Check with county or state perhaps they would share the cost of removing fence and sloping the ditch so it can be maintained better wouldn,t hurt to ask.

not sure about cost but get a dozer to remove fence/dig hole/bury fence. be done with it and get a nice clean place to start new fence.

Last I checked it cost about $3-4 a foot for wood/vinal fence. As far as clearing the old fence if the post go also a bulldozer and or front end loader work well, but you have to be careful of getting the wire in the tracks/axles.

I just removed a pretty heavy fence from my barnyard, and I used a tractor with a front loader to remove mine. I got underneath it and lifted it up, and 1 by 1 the posts and wire came up. Once I had it freed, I layed it down and seperated the wire and fence from the posts.

just for interest's sake, what became of the old wire? Nobody ever seems to re-use it (too brittle I suppose) and the metal recycling places around here don't want it.

Ours will take it now, but in the past they never wanted it. We'd sneak it in anyways in barrels and the like with other stuff piled on top. Now a days, they take it and give you tin prices. Fair enough for us. This year we brougth in a bunch of old barbed wire and baler wire, as well as a bunch of other tin, no problems. Feeld good to finally get rid of the stuff.

Our recycle places take it, but only if chopped into 3' sections, bound together. Makes for a lot of work, but I hate to keep the stuff on the place due to chance of hardware disease.
