What are your thoughts on using 5-rib implement tires on the front of a restored tractor? Hate to pass up a good buy, and it's a pretty light tractor, only about 2800 pounds. I think it originally had 3-rib style but I'm not worried about having it original, I just like the deal I'm getting on the 5-rib implement type.

5 or 4 rib? in reply to Rookie from out West ...., 09-07-2006 16:18:33
The only multi-rib frt. tires I've used are 4 rib. What brand are the 5 rib tires? Thanks,Tx Jim

Lots of brands. They are wagon tires, not much for rib depth.

I had them on the front of my MF-135 (11L-16) for floatation with a big loader. Then I moved them to my JD 4020 when I moved the loader. They were poor for turning in hay or loose dirt but they spread the load out so well the hay would stand back up (at least with the 135) if I backed off it.

I took them off the 4020 because when rotary hoeing, it took 20 or 30 feet for a steering correction to take effect and that was often part of 40 or 50 feet of crop run over. Even then I had to oversteer to get it to turn.

Gerald,I just looked at frt. tires on one of my tractors. It is a Firestone and it only has four(4) ribs. Granted I have seen implement tires with more than 4 ribs but not a specified frt. tractor tire suchas a 11LX16. I guess they never made it south of the Red River. Tx Jim

I have a set on '46 JD B and they look pretty good. If you hit a heavy spot sickle mowing though you do a U-Turn as they don't grip that well. The same applies to plowing snow, although you can just use your brakes and slide the front around, really helps with the manuverbility. I do know they will stay on the tractor when it gets redone, they are nice for what we use it for, aside from the mowing thing which we do very little of anymore.

They steer a little tougher than the 3-rib... but they ride better and have better floatation.

Easier on hay field, lawn, etc.

Nothing wrong with them. I am using 5 rib on my loader tractor. Seems to work fine, like someone else said I don't tear up yard grass if I have to load or unload anything on the yard...And mine were free!!!!:>)

If you aren't going to cultivate with it for a living why not? Also if you want to use it for a yard mowing tractor later it won't tear the grass up as much turning either. It's your tractor.
