After seeing all the irrigation rigs today I have a couple of questions.

What does it cost in fuel to pump that water?

And I noticed some places they plant the corners also on the center pivots.

So with the yield monitors we have today what is the difference in yield between irrigated and non irrigated?

I suppose that varies depending on the rain fall but on average what is the yield difference?

One other thing how do you shut the planter off to make those circular wheel tracks for the pivot? LOL

Gary

100 bu dryland would be a real good crop in a wet year. 50-75 wil hit it closer and then you way too many years it zeros out. I've had failure two years in a row. Why we do it? Just cuz there dirt is there I guess. Ask Allan, he likes farming better than I do.

Gary I made a mistake on the amount of Diesel. It takes 300 gallons to do a half turn. It takes about 600 Gallons to do a full circle. Don't know what I was thinking.

Gary I'm over in eastern Nebraska and we have a pivot that covers 257 acres. To put on one inch of Water cost's us about 300 gallons of Diesel. (Times whatever figure you want to put in). We bought fuel on contract for 204. so that helps. We get (depending on rain) about 120 to 140 on corn on dryland. Maybe a little more. Last year we put on seven inches of water and averaged 223 bushels.

That county is not much different than here in AZ. Good soil but not enough dependable rain for a crop. Up to seven cuttings of hay here, 250+ bu corn versus one hay cutting and forget the Corn if no irrigation. Most all have turned over to Electric pumps here. Cheaper than Natural Gas not to mention engine upkeep.

The fields are worked up and planted and the sprinkler is turned on and make's it's own tracks. The tracks are pretty deep by seasons end in some corn fields, and you ain't had fun till a tower set bogs down in tall corn.
