Central Illinois apples are $70 a bushel when you pick. Might as well go to the grocery store. What are they in your area?

As one who works for a friend with a pick your own operation, i often hear folks saying they expect p-y-o to be cheaper, after all-your doing the work!! Unfortunately what happens is the public has no idea how to pick apples. When a farmer picks he may drop one or two apples for every bushel box (40lbs) he gets. But when the public picks they drop 4 or 5 apples for every 1 apple they pick. I've have personally witnessed 50% of a crop ending up on the ground and have heard people say "Its too green, its too big, its too small, it had a spider on it, it has a hole (no, thats called the STEM !!) etc etc etc. Not to mention i've personally witnessed a 60 year old 200 lb man attempt to climb a 5 yr old tree with a 2" diameter trunk...and break the tree off at the base, limbs broken, tree stakes ripped out of the ground and used to beat the livin sh%t out of a tree, apples dumped into an irrigation pump inlet pipe, attempts to "double dip" (empty the bag out in the car and return for more as if you already paid), loading up a kid's wagon - spreading a blanket over the additional 40 lbs of apples and attempt to sneak out, etc etc. We were nieve enough to charge 0.99/lb for one year and have since had to go to 1.60/lb in order to turn a profit. So, next time you complain about the price (lets not forget the cost of labor, feul and spray that the farmer incurs as well), think about it for a moment. If your still unhappy then get your months old crappy apples from your generic big box store guy.

Dunno - I still think they could rot for that price! If it's so much hassle, then pick them and sell them yourself (no more PYO). There are probably 25 commercial orchards within 35 miles of us. The highest I've ever seen apples was last year - $17 a bu. Pick your own was $14. Around here they also don't let you drive to the trees and no climbing. There is also someone from the orchard wondering around to keep an eye on things. It's also "ground pick only", you can use a long arm picker, but you better be on the ground. Can't imagine paying $70 for apples, though. The orchards around here also make cider, wine, applesauce and applebutter, so the ones that end up on the ground don't bother them at all. Your situation may vary.

MAN! For that price they can rot on the tree! I've been going around to people around here (SE Nebraska) and piccking them for free! I've seen lots of trees with tons on them and windfalls underneath - I've asked and not been turned down yet! We've been peeling them, slicing them, and putting them in the freezer. Got enough to make a pie a week for over a year (and extra for Thanksgiving), several jars of applebutter, applesauce, and a bunch for just eating.
