Check out the November 06 issue of Car Craft magazine. They did a 500+ HP big block buildup of Ford,Mopar and GM engines. The 460 Ford was one of the best HP per $ combinations with the 460 making 514 HP at 5400 rpm and 565 ftlb of torque at 4400 rpm.

All you are getting is cubic inches. These engines have no power as built. The older ones built in the late '60s (429/460) had good iron in them, also some had 4 bolt main caps, some forged cranks and rods. They also had high compression and some pretty good heads. All you are getting here is a block with 460 cubic inches. You will have to buy your horsepower cause as it stands now it is nothing but dead weight and has nothing to offer you for pulling. You will be very dissapointed.

What you say may be true! Is your's a 1985 and completely stock? After all that IS what he was asking about. I never said they couldn't be altered to be good engines. All I said was,and I will stand by it, a stock 460 out of a 1985 pickup is going to really dissappoint anyone who thinks just because it's big, that it is powerfull.I'm really more a Ford man than Chevy, but if you put this pick-up in a pull against an '85 Chevy pickup with a 350 (also stock)I don't think there would be much difference at the end. 1985 was NOT a good time for Ford power or technology. Again, my answer is to the exact question he asked, not 460's in general. I agree with the other poster,if he is serious, buy a crate 460 that is built to run,not meet smog requirements in 1985! My opinion is that he sees big cubes at a dirt cheap price, and a weekend in the garage swapping and head out and pull away from everybody next pull. Simply ain't gonna happen! Either spend the big bucks or stay home. Just the way it is in pulling.

I doubt that it rated more than 300 or so in 85.
460 is just a 429 with a new crank (stroked) wouldnt worry bout HP...its real strong suit was TOURQUE
