Lokking for a suitable replacement engine for a 555 disel massey harris, engine in there is good for the time being, just know it'll not live long, I use it on the farm with care & like it very much, just out looking for somthing to drop in should this engine suddenly quit, as parts are real scarce. was considering a diesel out of a 265 massey.

Bill, I assume that the 555 has a JD 382 , I know the
55 does . You are right the parts supply is quite
limited . Those are one of my favorite engines to
work on , I have several ,but mine are the hopped
up model having a lanchester balancer in the crankcase and a roosa master fuel system driving
from where the distributor would mount on a gas
model . I build or modify other parts to keep them running . I use case rod bearings for rod brgs,
have to hone .025 out of the rod and narrow the
brg about .100 , works well. Also make mains from other brgs ( large MM rod brgs), piston pin and pin bushing are from 4.5 inch cat engine.
I put GI's in the ring grooves and bore and install dry sleeves in the wet sleeves . Oil
pump is mounted on the balancer and are prone
to wear as the balancer bushings wear and none
to be had. I use 6.2 chevy oil pumps and mount
them on the end of the balancer , make more oil pressure than it had when new.

In your situation , I would pull the pan to check the brgs , the rest of the engine will
probably run a long time .

holler if you need help.

george

Enjoy your tractor Bill. Triple 5s are quite collectable and should it fail you somebody will want to restore it. Don't borrow tomorrows troubles, Tomorrow will worry about itself.

Thanks,

will do ,ran it this year on my 1034 hay wagon & worked well, good weight to it, put new rubber all around on it, has original paint on it, came from around Humbolt Saskatchewan, put Michlien radials on it & handels real good even in slippery mud. just additional weights & no liquid ballast in tires.suprisingly it steers easier than other makes of its era. Just hate to give up the gohst when the engine breathes its last as we all know will happen some day, the hour meter says 3,250 .

You know its even quiter running than my chev with the isuzu diesel, beat that, energy cells!

Have an old set of massey plows that I bougt in quebec, a set of 4 /12 & well see how it does in clay in the fall this year. It spent all its idle time in the shed, was primarly used in the last 20 years to haul wagons off the field to the transport to the rail siding elevator.

thanks everyone, one of the first thing I did when i got it home was complete filter & fluid change,, suprise no leaks afterward, replaced hydraulic hoses & a few pin hole leaks in rad were patched, it did have its head changed out some years ago as is evident, obviously one from a 55 as it is red & rest of the engine is gold colour, doing the brakes at this time, some material left, but now is a good a time as ever & have some steep hills around here to transit on to get in & out of fields.

Will admit it draws a few looks from people when i was out picing up hay with it last summer.

At 3250 hours, a diesel is just broken in. It ought to go at least twice that. Might need an injector pump rebuild one of these days from plastic parts dying of old age.

Keep good oil (modern like Rotella) in it and change the filters in a timely manner.
