OT: Old Chevy Mechanic's advice needed!

OK...I know it ain't a tractor, but it's parked in the same shed. Few weeks ago at a auction, I bought a one-owner 1980 Chevy 1/2T 4x4 pickup, 250 Six cylinder, automatic, w/ 70,000 miles. I thought it might make a good farm pickup to leave here on the place. Runs just fine...after a tune-up, new shocks, brakes, exhaust system.
Today, for the first time, I tried out the 4 wheel drive, and don't you know it...I can't get it out of 4-wheel drive. :~( Transfer case seems to shift OK, but stays engaged in 4 wheel high.
I've driven dozens of these old coots over the years, and never had this problem. Where do I start looking??

Does it have 4 matched tires, with the same air pressure?

"Engage 4X4" is positive, done by a shift yoke, but in "disengage mode", the shift yoke simply backs off, and a spring pushes the 4X4 shift collar setup apart when there is no "windup" or stress on the driveline.

If the driveline is under tension in 4X4, due to umatched tires, or even the fact someone has swapped gears in one axle or the other, without doing both, the shift collar won't move, and "let go" until you've driven a ways, and hit a few bumps.

Even if the tires and gear ratios match, you MAY have to drive a ways, or even back up a short distance, until the 4X4 shift collar pops out of the engaged position USUALLY accompanyed by a pretty good jerk, and clunk in the driveline.

Just a thought, Allan would probably be better on this than me but... If it has the cast iron transfer case, which it should, it could be a linkage adjustment.
They have a goofy double linkage setup. You move the lever and both linkages move. I"ve seen em where one gets real worn, out of adjustment or the nut comes loose on the transfer case. I"ve also seen em get all gunked up. They"re kind of a pain to adjust. I"d probably pull the whole shifter assembly off, clean it up good, spray everything with your favorite penetrating oil and keep working it. It"s been awhile since I`ve worked on one but if I remember right that`s just about what can happen.
To tell, figure out which linkage is your mode fork. Have someone in the truck(safety first)move the lever ahead toward 2 high. Watch which linkage moves ad give it a little help with a bar. See if that pops it back int 2 high. Of course if it`s an aluminum transfer case, disregard all this. (probably should`ve put this disclaimer on top, now its too late.) Hope this helps Brokenwrench

Think you are right, 1980 was the last year for the 205 transfer case. Think it was 81 that they put the 208 and hubs you had to back up to disingage.

Thanks, I did remember that, and already backed up across the yard a couple times. Tried unlocking and locking hubs, but the old thing just seems determined to stay in 4WD. Shifts to 4 Low just fine, but not back to 2 High.

Okay,

*IF* and I repeat *IF* the tires are all the same size and not putting the transfer case in a bind, I'd suspect the mode fork in the case.

They had a real bad habit of dropping the teflon wear bars off the fork and that mode collar won't move far enough to snap in and out of 4X4.

Also, they would sometimes loose the snap-ring off the rear of the mainshaft which would allow the shaft to move rearward 1/4" and mess up the shift pattern further forward.

Really doubt if the trouble lies in your hubs. Usually that trouble shows up as "no 4X4".

Seriously tho, I'd really check the tires. Even putting new tires on one end or the other and leaving the old ones on the other end would mess 'em up enough to keep them from shifting in and out of gear.
